Previous models were packed with a 4.7-liter engine. This pioneering engine produced up to 310 hp at 6000 rpm and 325 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. With that, the Maserati Bora kept moving forward and took control of the drag strip, threatening its opponents. By 1973, the brand introduced a new, more powerful V8 engine to the Bora line.

Unlike the initial engine, the larger option acquired additional notches on both ends. It now offered a peak 330 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 335 lb-ft at 4000 rpm. Soon, a larger engine became the standard option. Regardless, every engine came mated to the same ZF 5-speed manual gearbox to drive the rear wheels.
