The Richmond California home where Green Day is practiced is for sale

Beyond the bright red door lies the history of Green Day.

A luxury custom-built home among the rolling hills in Richmond, California is for sale for just over a million dollars. Downstairs, a group of high school friends in the late ’80s played the band there. They became the Grammy-winning rockers known as Green Day, according to agent Don Adamson of Red Oak Realty.

Adamson said Jon Kiefemayer, the band’s original drummer, and his sister Catherine Mendoza are selling the gorgeous hillside home, at 5350 Heavenly Ridge, where Green Day was formed.

Adamson said the two brothers live elsewhere in the Bay Area and have decided to sell the home of their parents, who recently came to life. The home was purchased in 1989 for $360,000 and hasn’t been on the market since, according to the public record.

“Watch the hawks in flight, and witness the magnificent sunset from this extraordinary hilltop haven,” according to the official property listing.

The house spans 2,962 square feet of light, airy and inviting living space. Built in 1983, the three-story home has five bedrooms and four bathrooms and sits on 0.3 acres.

“From the warm wood-paneled exterior to the vaulted ceilings and divider windows, there’s a sense of comfort that tastefully intertwines with contemporary style,” according to the listing. “Vaulted ceilings expand the space upwards creating depth that perfectly matches the open wood-beamed ceiling of the sunroom next to the modern dining room that allows natural light to stream into the home.

Adamson describes the property as “very unique” with “extraordinary views.”

“It really has extraordinary views of North Bay, Marin County, and Mount Tam,” he said. “It has great big spaces, a sunroom and a great master suite with a large bathtub and deck. And you know, the deck is probably the best view in the house, because you’re looking straight north so you can really get a great shot of the bay and (Mount Tamalpais).”

Richmond is a city with diverse neighborhoods. The median home listing price in April 2022 was $640,000, up 16.4 percent from a year ago.. The median sale price was $775,000.

“The concept of nature and home was heavily considered when designing this impressive floor plan,” the listing states. From the large windows in the den and the large living room that let out onto the sunny back deck to the romantic upstairs balcony of the main room overlooking the bay. Witness the wonders of the landscape and gorgeous sunsets alone or with friends and family by your side.”

Kiffmeyer, a musician better known as Al Sobrante, left the band in 1990 to become a full-time student at Humboldt State University. He appeared on the bands’ first releases and their debut album.

The band was originally named Sweet Children, but changed its name in 1989 to Green Day to avoid confusion with another local punk band at the time, Sweet Baby, according to Adamson.

Current Green Day members include standoff player Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirt and Trey Cole. Adamson said that when Kiefemayer left the band, his replacement, Trey Cole, auditioned for the first time at the Richmond home.
