A third-generation BMW X1 appears to be on the horizon, with prototypes of the upcoming SUV being tested — with the hot 35i on the cards, too.

This variant of the Audi Q2 and Mercedes GLA should launch in 2022 with a range of petrol and hybrid options, with the potential for a new iX1 electric car further down the line.

Design of the 2022 BMW X1

Despite its heavy camouflage, you can clearly see that the new BMW X1 has a bolder look than before.

A very wide range of “kidney” grilles – although not as tall as those found in the latest BMW 4 Series – are flanked by angular headlights.

You can spot a more pronounced sloping roofline than in the outgoing BMW X1, along with a set of alloy wheels that look ready for production.

The taillights are set higher than the previous car as well, and look forward to a slim design similar to those on the BMW X4.

Spotted 2022 BMW X1 M35i

The M35i will join the BMW X1 range for the first time. This high-performance SUV will borrow the engine from the hot hatch M135i, which means a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 306 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque.

This will be sent to all four wheels, and can provide a 0-60 mph time of about 5 seconds. Other changes will include body tweaks to make the X1’s grip angles more nimble, and some visual improvements to help you distinguish it from the standard car.

These spy shots don’t give much away, but you’ll spot a bunch of big exhaust outlets at the back of the car. The BMW X1 M35i should have a more aggressive body kit as well, along with plenty of M badges.

Being the X1 range-topping, it’ll come with a small premium – starting at the £40,000 mark, which makes it a nice fit in the Audi SQ2.

2022 BMW X1 interior and infotainment system

The BMW X1 is expected to feature a very minimalist interior, with much of the physical controls replaced by touch screen icons within the infotainment system.

Expect to see parts of the Class 1 interior that have been carried over

In terms of design, it should be very similar to the current 1 Series albeit with a raised seating position. BMW’s latest iDrive system will also appear, along with a digital driver display in place of physical dials and gauges.

2022 BMW X1 Engines

The new BMW X1 will be built using a modified version of the mechanical foundations also used in the new 1 Series and X2. As such, the engine options will likely be similar to what’s on offer for those cars. Petrol and diesel versions should form the core of the range, with a few hybrid options as well.

The current X1 xDrive25e Plug-in Hybrid combines an electric motor with a petrol engine that produces 220 horsepower and an electric driving range of up to 35 miles. These numbers may improve for the new model.

An all-electric BMW iX1 is also available, but this prototype is not – and it is unlikely that it will come along with the launch of the new BMW X1.

BMW X1 2022 price and release date

Prices for the all-new BMW X1 will likely start at £30,000 (in line with the current car’s price), although you can expect to pay a little extra for the plug-in hybrid and/or all-wheel drive option. BMW hasn’t revealed a release date yet, but it could hit showrooms by 2022.
