A more premium version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the Lexus GX is sold only in select foreign markets such as the United States (its largest market) and other countries such as the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Panama, Ukraine and even Russia.
In the US, the Lexus GX’s 4.6-liter V8 petrol engine starts at $56,000 ($79,929 in AUD at the time of writing), compared to the Prado’s four-cylinder diesel that cost $87,000 before driving on local roads at the top. -The shape of the Kakadu is specific, so the V8 GX is not far from the price of a top-spec Prado here in Australia.
So what is a Lexus GX and will we see it here in Australia?
The GX is the Lexus version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, lavishly equipped in typical Lexus style.
Available powertrains include a 202 kW / 381 Nm 4.0 liter V6 in China (which was sold here in Australia in the Prado engine compartment but discontinued in 2020) and larger displacement, more powerful 4.6 liter V8 engine producing up to 224 kW In the United States in particular.
The 4.6-liter V8 is slightly decoupled for some markets including Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Vietnam and produces between 215-218 kW of power.
The upcoming Prado will likely have a V6 diesel engine in Australia
Chasing Cars has already speculated that the next Toyota Prado could get the twin-turbo V6 diesel engine already found in the 300 Series Land Cruiser. This engine produces 227 kW of power and 700 Nm of torque And sends it to all four wheels.
We also envisioned that the Prado could one day receive the hybrid gasoline powertrain currently used in the Toyota Tundra pickup truck outbound.
The new Prado is slated to launch in Japan sometime in the middle of 2022, so we can expect to see the new Prado come to Australia sometime in 2023.
What kind of specs are available for a Lexus GX overseas?
The Lexus GX comes with many features as standard in the US, even on the “base” model that includes triple-beam headlights, a 10.3-inch center touchscreen, dynamic navigation, Apple CarPlay integration, Android Auto, 10-day power-adjustable seats, seven seats Dual-zone climate control, power sunroof and 10 airbags.
In luxury trims, the GX includes adaptive variable suspension, auto-levelling rear air suspension, power third-row seats, and 19-inch six-spoke wheels.
Also available is an Off-Road Package that adds a panoramic display, multi-terrain monitoring, a fuel tank guard under the chassis, crawl control, and multi-terrain selection.
