The latest Land Rover Defender comes with an invitation to compete in an off-road adventure race

The latest Land Rover Defender is more than just a nostalgic limited-edition SUV.

The British automaker has unveiled a North American-exclusive version of the Defender 90 P400 X-Dynamic SE called the Cup Edition. The special 4×4 features a number of off-road driving upgrades and comes with an invitation to the Adventure Contest that will take place later this fall.

Land Rover’s latest Trophy Edition models are inspired by the beloved off-road Camel Trophy competition, sometimes called the “4×4 Olympics,” held annually between 1980 and 2000. Like previous versions—last year’s model was based on the Defender 110—featuring The iconic yellow and white racing balm associated with competition. Except for the heritage-inspired wrap, special decals, and all-black wheels, the car looks just like the standard Defender 90. There is nothing wrong with that of course. The two-door version of the Reborn 4×4 is one of the best looking SUVs currently on the market.

The Sport variant is also equipped with a number of off-road upgrades. These include Defender’s multiple accessory packages (air suspension, cold climate package, off-road capability and advanced off-road) and a hitch receiver. It also has a plethora of other add-ons such as an electronic lift, roof rack, and a deployable ladder. I left the powertrain as is—a 3.0-liter inline-six mated to an automatic gearbox—but that’s basically a fully loaded Defender 90.

The Defender Trophy Edition is more than just an SUV. The 4×4 is limited to just 250 models, each with an invitation to compete in the North American Cup competition that will take place at the Land Rover Experience Center in Manchester, Vermont, on October 8. And if you win it. You will be invited to compete in another off-road race scheduled to take place in the UK sometime next year.

The 2023 Defender Trophy Edition will cost $95,000, which is $25,000 more than the standard off-road version. The car is set to go on sale later this month, but you won’t want to waste any time if you’re interested. After all, the competition is just under three months away.
