The disappearance of Kelly Rodney: all that is known so far

There are few clues to Kelly Rodney’s disappearance.

Truckee, California – With the search for a missing teen in Truckee stretching into another day, few details remain about her disappearance and what it may have been.

Rodney disappeared after attending a party near Prosser Family Campground in Truckee and was last seen around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Officials said her phone is out of service, and her 2013 Honda CRV with license plate “8YUR127” could not be found.

Although Rodney was at a party of up to 300 people, deputies say there are few clues investigators should follow.

Rodney is 16 years old with a height of 5 feet 7 inches and weighs around 115 lbs with blonde hair and hazel eyes. Anyone who knows her missing is asked to call the anonymous tip line at 530-581-6320 and press option 7. Her family said they are being offered a $50,000 reward for information they hope will lead to Rodney’s safe return.

Who is Kelly Rodney?

Kelly Rodney’s name has been in the headlines since August 6, when she disappeared after a party near Prosser Family Campground.

“She’s always so good at checking in and telling me where she is and I haven’t had any news of her,” Lindsey Rodney Neiman, Rodney’s mother, told ABC10. “It’s only scary when you don’t know where your son is.”

Her mother said that her daughter graduated from high school at the age of 16 with honors. She is described as intelligent, beautiful and gentle.

Where is the AMBER alert?

On August 7, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said they are treating Rodney’s disappearance as a kidnapping. However, officials said they did not actually have the evidence to say it was in fact a kidnapping.

A spokesperson for the mayor’s office told ABC10 that they began treating the case as a kidnapping because they were unable to find a Honda Rodney, despite the resources they set aside for the search effort.

AMBER alerts must meet certain requirements. While Rodney’s case has three out of four requirements, deputies have no evidence that this was a kidnapping. More information about the AMBER alert process is available here.

What are the clues left behind?

Authorities have released a handful of photos as search efforts continue.

One of the photos shows a hoodie that Rodney was loaned to on August 5, the day before she went missing.

Another photo is an actual depiction of Kiely’s 2013 Silver Honda CR-V from the winter.

She also posted a picture of Kelly seen hours before her disappearance. She was seen wearing a black bodysuit, green Dickies pants, and a black studded belt.

On August 11, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office released a photo of Rodney before she disappeared. Representatives drew attention to the necklace seen wearing in the photo and asked anyone who had seen it to contact the mayor’s office.

On August 13, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced that they had found what they believed to be a burial site near the campground. Once the FBI, Placer’s Office, and Nevada Mayor’s Office secure the scene, they find the remains of a dog.

Police praised the “astronomical number” of volunteers who helped, and added that divers have been deployed to Prosser Lake to continue the search.

The deputies also asked the community to provide any information that could assist the investigation.
