The Chevy Silverado 2023 Police Truck can go on off-road and off-road

  • For the first time, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is available as a police pickup truck.
  • Known as the Silverado PPV (Police Pursuit Vehicle), it has massive 16.0-inch front rotors, rear locking and a 2.0-inch lift option.
  • The Chevy Police Truck features a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Johnny Law gets a new Chevrolet chase car capable of chasing on public roads, through backwoods, and everywhere in between. Enter the 2023 Silverado PPV. It’s the first time Chevy has built a chase-rated pickup truck, joining the Tahoe PPV that has been a trusty horse for police departments since its debut in 1997.

The PPV versions of the Tahoe and Silverado share a lot of components, including the powertrain and other equipment. Both use a 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 that is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It also shares 20-inch black rims mounted on Goodyear all-terrain tires and massive 16.0-inch iron front rotors fitted with six-piston Brembo calipers. For comparison, the Silverado’s standard front discs are three inches smaller, measuring 13.0 inches in diameter.

Every 2023 Chevy Silverado PPV is equipped with a crew cab and a short five-foot-eight-inch cargo box. The truck has a towing rating of 9,300 pounds, which is 1,100 pounds more than the Tahoe PPV is capable of towing. Unlike its SUV counterpart, the Silverado is available with a 2.0-inch suspension lift. This increases ground clearance and approach angle to 11.4 inches and 25.9 degrees respectively, so lawbreakers will have a harder time using the treacherous terrain to hide.

Even without the elevated ride height, the Silverado PPV comes equipped with some notable off-road hardware. There’s a skid plate for extra bottom protection, a set of Rancho shocks from the regular truck’s Z71 package, and a lockable rear differential. Cops can also choose the Tri-Fold Hard Tonneau Bed Cover or the Chevy Multifunction Tailgate.

The interior of the Silverado PPV takes a no-nonsense approach as we dig it. From the tried-and-true transmission to electrically adjustable cloth seats and vinyl flooring options, there are few amenities. The front jump seat can be removed on request, making room for whatever else the cops might want to put there.

While we certainly don’t want to see a Silverado PPV in our rear-view mirror, we’d love to see one on our driveway. In fact, the more we think about the truck’s off-road trim, bare interior, and all of its other stylish features, the more we wish the brand would offer one necktie for regular, law-abiding citizens. After all, it would be a worthy competitor to the recently revealed Ford F-150 Rattler, which exists as an entry-level off-road vehicle.

Chevy hasn’t said how much the 2023 Silverado PPV will cost, but the company said it will be available in the US and Canada sometime later this summer.
