Buying an antique at auction is a proud moment. Lots of land, paintings, jewelry, vintage cars, ships, and more are being bought at auction. But someone recently ended up buying the remains of a corpse by mistake.
what or what: A family in New Zealand bought a bag at auction at a storage facility, not expecting what came out of it. Inside they found human remains. The police are now investigating the case.
Now, while this New Zealand family may have inadvertently bought human remains, there are many people who have spent millions of dollars on the strangest things.
The list of things people have sold or bought at auction is weirder than you might think.
1. The air of Kanye West’s concert
A plastic bag that says “AIR FROM DONDA DROP” was auctioned off on eBay in August 2021. The seller mentioned the air from a DONDA Drop event with Kanye West.
The seller mentioned that he attended the concert at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and filled a zipper bag with air from that event.
The plastic bag sold for $7,600 on eBay.
2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s breath
A jar of air by ex-Hollywood couple Pratt Pitt and Angelina Jolie was auctioned off on eBay in 2010.
Yes, here we have some real questions: a) How was the air trapped in the jar? b) How do you prove that the air inside them is their breath?
Well, back in 2010, ‘celebrity air’ was totally in fashion. The jar was auctioned for $523.
3. Paste the banana on the wall
The lame of them all is this. A banana canal that was pasted on the wall was also auctioned.
Bananas were sold for $120,000 at the Basel Art Gallery in Miami. Commonly referred to as “art,” the taped banana has been dubbed “the comedian,” and was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.
4. A dead shark in formaldehyde
Damien Hirst’s pickled shark was sold to America by Charles Saatchi for nearly £7 million ($8 million).
This 14-foot tiger shark has been coated with formaldehyde. It was first shown at the Saatchi Gallery in London in 1992. It was titled The Impossibility of Physical Death in the Mind of Someone Alive.
5. Justin Timberlake’s Leftover French Toast
About 20 years ago, Justin Timberlake left some French toast served during the Z100 morning show in New York City. The station’s DJ jokingly put two slides up for sale on eBay. A teenage girl named Kathy Summers bought it for $1,025.
“I’ll probably freeze it, lock it up… then put it on my dresser,” said the girl.
