Elon Musk has been very open to the idea that the Tesla Model Y is the best-selling car in the world, first in terms of revenue and then in terms of volume. The Model Y certainly has a lot of momentum, as the car recently topped the D-SUV class in Europe in the first half of 2022.
The D-SUV segment in Europe is competitive, with well-known players such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC being the mainstays. Automotive business intelligence firm JATO Dynamics noted in a blog post this month that Europe is seeing a rise in electric and electric vehicle sales. In the first half of 2022, for example, Gatto noted that one in five cars sold in Europe is electrified.
But while electrified cars include plug-in hybrid drives, pure electric vehicles are growing in popularity. This was particularly evident in the D-SUV segment, where the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in the first half of 2012 with 44,468 units sold. This allowed the Model Y to beat popular competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Volvo XC60, BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
The Model Y’s D-SUV class rating is particularly impressive because it competes not only with fellow electric vehicles but also with popular gas and diesel rivals. This bodes well for the Model Y as a whole, and suggests that Elon Musk’s estimates of the car’s overall popularity may not necessarily be as far-fetched as Tesla skeptics think.
It’s not just the Model Y. According to data from JATO Dynamics, the Tesla Model 3 sedan was also ranked as the second best selling electric car in Europe during the first half of 2022. The Model 3 sold 39,896 units in the 1H22 in Europe, beating more affordable competitors such as the Fiat 500 rated The Model 3 is particularly impressive considering that SUVs (like its sister Model Y) are gaining popularity in Europe.
Elon Musk first mentioned his Model Y ratings last year, and since then, the all-electric crossover SUV has seen a surge in popularity. In the US alone, the estimated delivery time for the Y Long Range is in the second quarter of next year, with Fremont Factory and Giga Texas ramping up production of the vehicle.
