Specialized Pegasus vehicle inks deal with creative bus sales to sell vehicles on Zeus electric chassis

LONG BEACH, California — Pegasus Specialty Vehicles, a Dunkirk, Ohio-based company led by veterans of the school and transit bus industries, announced details of a newly forged agreement with the nation’s largest bus agency, Creative Bus Sales, during a media event at the Advanced Show. Clean Transportation Expo on May 11, in Long Beach, California.

Pegasus will build Type A school buses, electric shuttle buses and semi-transit buses using the Zeus Electric Chaisher Power Platform to deliver what it says will be decisively different from the gas or diesel conversions that dominate the market today. The Zeus Z-19 cab chassis has been specifically designed and optimized for bus chassis installation and system integration.

The deal with Creative Bus Sales enables the three companies to capture sales and win a portion of the bountiful state and federal grant money that spurs rapid adoption of electric buses. With Creative Bus Sales’s nationwide distribution footprint and deep market penetration, along with Pegasus and Zeus’ unique BEV offering, organizations are well positioned to compete.

“We’re very excited to be dealing with the Pegasus product line and the timing couldn’t be better,” said Jason Hohalock, California director of sales for Creative Bus Sales in California. “Our customers have been looking for new and better solutions, and Pegasus Type A school buses, electric shuttle buses and semi-transit bus bodies provide us with exactly this Zeus electric chassis.”

With all-wheel drive, independent suspension and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 19,500 pounds, the Pegasus bus on the Zeus Z-19 Power platform is different from other vehicles in the A-Type School Bus, Shuttle and Transportation. Bus classes. Its electric motors generate a continuous output of 290 horsepower and 2,040 foot-pounds of torque, enabling it to work in inclement weather, on challenging terrain and allowing it to haul up to 8000 lbs of payload within a record 150-mile range.

The Zeus chassis provides a platform specifically designed for the chassis of the Pegasus bus. In addition to integrating an all-electric propulsion train, the modular battery concept inherent in the design of Zeus provides the flexibility to fully integrate powered climate systems and power entry elevators with chassis systems. The Zeus frame rail system’s sturdier construction, and market-leading payload output, will accommodate larger buses on the same platform.

Barrington was quick to see the advantages of Zeus’ design and was one of the first to sign an initial purchase order placed with Zeus for four hulls. “From our first conversation, I knew I wanted to put a bus body on a Zeus chassis. Working with Zeus and having a chassis tailored to our needs is unprecedented. Because it’s not a conversion, the Zeus platform is built to meet the unique requirements of all-electric design,” he says. Barrington. “Being in and around the industry and having a chassis supplier ask us what we want, and then build the chassis to meet that, is exactly what we want to do with our buses for our customers.”

“The level of cooperation and co-development between Zeus and Pegasus is what is necessary to transform the industry,” said Bill Brandt, chief revenue officer of Zeus. “Hilling ability, reliability, safety and overall vehicle productivity will be improved through this approach.”

Significant funding at the state and national levels is accelerating the growth of the electric school bus market. Nationally, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act allocated $5 billion over five years to replace diesel-powered school buses across the United States and the United States. While states individually operate VW beneficiary commutation settlement funds, most of them include a large electric bus award opportunity. Other government programs are being rolled out—for example, the California Hybrid and Electric Bus Program (HVIP) provides $130 million for public school buses, and more is available for commercial and transit bus applications.

The agreement with Creative Bus Sales provides a nationwide sales base for Pegasus and allows the company to benefit from its extensive service network and long experience in the bus market. Creative Bus Sales is a registered HVIP dealer for customers in California. Zeus Electric has received an Executive Order (EO) from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its 2022 Z-19 and Z-22 all-electric work trucks.
