Rolls-Royce Ghost is the ultimate in tradition

You’ll be lucky to get an expensive 18 mpg, but if that worries you, this car definitely isn’t for you.

Honestly, if you can’t buy fuel, you definitely don’t have the money to buy the car itself.

With a starting price of around a quarter of a million pounds, the latest Rolls-Royce Ghost is undoubtedly a beautiful machine, approaching a work of automotive art.

I’ve had a fun few days with one person and loved every minute although it’s not good if you want to stay out of sight as it attracts attention – mostly admired – from pedestrians and other motorists alike.

They are the most technologically advanced Rolls to date, and the most successful in the brand’s 118-year history.

This car has everything you could wish for, from its massive 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that pumps out 563 horsepower and staggering torque, to the starlight roof liner and the passenger-side-lit side hatch with 850 stars that gently glow at nightfall.

RR has mastered the art of combining opulence with practicality as you dive into plush heated and massage leather seats while your feet rest on thick lambswool rugs.

Like all new Rolls-Royces, there is no set price because the cost will depend on what you select. Each individual vehicle where you can have everything you want – for a price.

So the concept car was priced ‘around’ £320,000 but that number is flexible and could face a long wait for delivery as it was hand-built by a workforce of 2,000 at Goodwood’s West Sussex headquarters. ‘Original’ models – not called ‘used’ – are quickly finding buyers in the far north of the UK’s seven dealerships, at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Edinburgh that covers Scotland, northern and southern Ireland and part of northern England.

The Phantom was introduced 12 years ago as less ostentatious than the flagship Phantom and this latest version is indeed a new car with the only components carried over from the original – the awnings hidden in the doorframe and the iconic Euphoria spirit above the classic radiator grille.

It’s longer and wider than the outgoing model, and the suspension has been changed to allow the massive V12 engine to be positioned behind the front axle for optimal weight distribution. For the first time in a production car, continuously variable electronically controlled shock absorbers and self-leveling air struts are used to enhance Rolls’ legendary “magic carpet ride.”

It ran on the main roads effortlessly and the only problem was keeping the big beast within the national speed limit. Grooves, potholes, and uneven surfaces were swept aside with barely a moan.

The car also has four-wheel drive and all-wheel steering for better maneuverability and stability on turns. Acceleration is amazing and effortless, driving this two-and-a-half-ton machine to 60 mph in just over four and a half seconds.

There is more than 100kg of acoustic damping material in doors, the roof, between double-glazed windows, inside tires and inside virtually every vehicle body.

As you’d expect, regardless of any custom fixture, the Ghost comes with LED and laser headlights, day and night wildlife and pedestrian warning, alert assistant, four-camera system with panoramic view, panoramic view and helicopter vision, active cruise control, collision warning of traffic and departures, a high-resolution display screen, a wi-fi hotspot, a self-parking, and a sophisticated navigation system.

There’s even a small button in the center console that electronically closes the doors, eliminating that awkward stretch.

But one of the smartest features of all are the center caps for each of the four wheels. They don’t rotate – instead they are on bearings so the logo is always pointing right up.

This kind of attention to detail is what makes Rolls-Royce such a special car and the latest Ghost keeps this century-old tradition alive.
