Rare 2020 McLaren Speedtail could fetch up to $3 million at auction – Robb reports

One of the best aspects of the auto auction scene is that it gives serious auto collectors another chance for the vehicles of their dreams.

Take the extremely rare 2020 McLaren Speedtail, for example. The Hybrid would have been impossible to break down after it was advertised, but now, thanks to Mecum Auctions, you’ll get the chance to add an example to your garage that’s barely paid for.

Introduced in the fall of 2018, the Speedtail is only the fourth member of McLaren’s Ultimate Series, following in the footsteps of the now legendary F1, P1 and Senna (which goes all the way back to pre-Elva). The brand’s first Hyper GT was designed “A pure fusion of science and art in the form of cars,” The best thing you can see is its stretchy carbon fiber body. The car’s futuristic appearance was not intended to catch the eye – although it does just that – but to help it pierce the air with as little resistance as possible. It was also exclusive, with only 106 being produced at the brand’s factory in Woking, England.

This particular example was the #87 derailing again in 2020. The stunning car, which features a set of bi-hedral doors, is finished in a beautiful Heritage Gloss Steel Blue coat and rides on a set of shiny silver wheels with front-pull-covers cuts. Wrapped in Michelin P-Zero tyres. Inside, the cabin and its three seats are trimmed in coordinating aniline blue metallic leather with subtle accents of McLaren’s trademark orange. Up front, you’ll find a set of five screens that make the driver feel like they’re in the cockpit of a fighter plane.

Also of note is the car’s hybrid powertrain. At its heart is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 mated to a 7-speed Graziano dual-clutch transmission that can produce 746 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The muscular mill is powered by a parallel-hybrid eMotor that boosts total output to 1,055 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torsion. Pushed to its limits, the car can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 mph, easily making it McLaren’s fastest production vehicle. This example has only achieved 275 miles since it was delivered, so it should be able to perform like new.

This Speedtail is set to hit the block on Wednesday, May 17, as part of the Mecum’s Indy 2022 sale. The auction house expects it to sell for between $2.8 million and $3 million. That’s more than the original poster price of $2.6 million, but given how rare the car is, that’s only to be expected.
