Planning tour: Somerset West and Taunton, July 2022

The abandoned buildings of a farm in a village near Taunton can be converted into a yoga retreat with studio and three vacation cabins.

If successful, plans will see the outbuildings converted and an extension built to create a yoga studio, communal lounge and three vacation cabins.

The holiday cabins will have a kitchen/diner, living area, shower room and bedroom.

The site currently consists of a home, vacation rental, workshop, abandoned pig farm, former POW barracks, and a Dutch barn.

The farm currently offers alpaca experiences, giving guests educational trails around the land and the chance to hand-feed the animals.

Yoga sessions are held outdoors in the fields, and there are two playgrounds for rent. The on-site vacation rental was recently renewed.

Kingston St Mary is a village located four miles north of Taunton.

A statement with the planning app said: “The Yoga Resort will expand the existing business on the site using the serene nature of the site and provide a beautiful experience for people to use as a vacation getaway.

“The third building will be redesigned as a communal atrium where guests can dine together and have space for activities.”

New wetlands could be created near the M5 in Somerset to enable new residential and commercial projects to progress.

Some of the county’s major residential and commercial developments were held under a Dutch Court N ruling prohibiting increases in phosphate levels.

SWT has committed £2 million to create new wetlands and adopt a new system of ‘phosphate stocks’ to unleash the new developments.

Now, Chelston Heath LLP has drawn up plans to create wetlands near Wellington that could allow for major commercial development.

Taunton placed an order in January to deliver new business units on the east side of the Chelston Link Road connecting Wellington to the M5 at Junction 26.

The development will include two food and beverage kiosks and one restaurant, as well as an electric vehicle charging hub, and could create up to 236 new jobs.

To mitigate the impact of the development, the company plans to create a wetland at the southern end of the site, which forms part of the Ton River catchment area.

Seven new ponds will be created, connected by embankments, with a large number of trees planted on the site.

In other planning news, Taunton School has revealed multi-million pound plans to restructure its campus.

The application seeks to demolish several buildings to allow the construction of two new buildings for academic education and the provision of housing.

The school also hopes to build a pedestrian bridge on Greenway Road to connect the main campus to sports facilities, including a multi-lit play area.
