Pence refuses entry to Secret Service van on January 6 ‘chilling’: Raskin

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s refusal to get into a Secret Service vehicle during the January 6 Capitol riots is called “scary” as the House select committee prepares to reveal its findings sometime before the end of the year.

Speaking at an event Thursday hosted by Georgetown University’s Center for Faith and Justice, Democratic Representative Jimmy Raskin of Maryland, who is also a member of the Capitol Riot Inquiry Committee, accused former President Donald Trump of trying to stage a coup to circumvent Joe. Biden wins the 2020 presidential election and stays in power. NBC News reported that during the talk, he particularly drew attention to a tense moment in which Pence was involved.

After being moved to an undisclosed part of the Capitol during the riots, Pence’s Secret Service agents, whom Raskin suspected were reporting directly to Trump’s security agents, asked him to get into an armored limousine. The intent, some have assumed, was to get Pence off the building, and prevent him from certifying election results, after he had indicated his unwillingness to conflict with his duties and keep Trump in power.

“[Pence] He said what I think are the six most chilling words from this whole thing I’ve ever seen: “I’m not in that car,” Raskin said. He knew exactly what the coup was they had planned for him to do.”

This moment was previously reported during an interview with the writers, I Can Fix It On My Own: Donald J Trump’s Disastrous Final Year by Washington Post Correspondents Philip Rucker and Carol Leonig. According to Tim Gibbles, the lead agent within Pence’s security on January 6, Pence has repeatedly refused to be evicted from the Capitol until the election results are certified, Washington Examiner mentioned.

“I’m not in the car, Tim,” Pence said in response to Gibbles’ insistence on getting in the armored car. “I trust you Tim, but you don’t drive. If you get in that car, you guys will take off. I won’t get in the car.”

Raskin discussed the House Select Committee investigation further on Thursday, claiming in no uncertain terms that Trump and those closest to him attempted to stage a coup after the 2020 election.

“This was not a coup directed at the president,” the congressman said. “It is a coup by the president against the vice president and against the Congress,” he added.
