OGS announces free summer tours at Empire State Plaza and Capitol | local ads

ALBANI – New York State Office of Public Services (OGS) Commissioner Janet Moy has announced the return of popular and free summer tours of the Empire State Plaza and outdoor sculptures. Beginning June 22, new this year, “Ride the Plaza” tours that will showcase the Empire State Plaza in a comfortable, specially air-conditioned, and easily accessible CDTA trolley.

Commissioner Moy said, “Both the Capitol and Empire State Plaza are home to fascinating history, remarkable architecture, and world-class artwork. Free activities. Thanks to our partner CDTA, trolley tours will help facilitate easy access for visitors to the Plaza.”

Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza is located in the center of one of the world’s most fascinating capitals: a 98-acre city within a city that houses one of the nation’s greatest public collections of modern art, the State Museum, and the unique performing arts center The Egg.

“Ride the Plaza!” – trolley ride

Visitors can relax and enjoy learning about local landmarks, architecture, art, memorials, and history. Additionally, Wednesdays in the plaza also include a farmers market, food trucks, and live music. The wagon is fully accessible and can seat up to 36 passengers, and reservations are recommended. Riders will be required to wear masks.

Where: Take the rickshaw on Madison Avenue, near the World War II Memorial in New York. The cart will return to the same location at the end of the tour.

When: Two tours on Wednesdays, June 22 through August 31 at 12:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Tours last 45 minutes.

“Spotlight on Art” themed tours of the Empire State Plaza Art Collection

Art historians have described the collection as “the largest collection of modern American art at any one public site that is not a museum.” The tour will focus on the history of the collection, as well as the most notable 92 works of art on permanent display throughout the Plaza’s interior atrium level. Weather permitting, tours will also include pieces located outdoors.

Where: Corning Tower Security Office, Lobby Level

When: Last Monday of the month, June 27-August 29 at 11 a.m. Tours last 45 minutes.

Take a tour of the New York State Capitol

Perched atop the hill of Albany State Street, the New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government in New York since the 1880s. The building is a marvel of late 19th century architectural grandeur, built by hand of solid stone over a period of 32 years. Highlights of the 45-minute tours can include the Legislative Rooms, Governor’s Hall, Governor’s Reception Room, New York Hall, Historic Stairs, and Sculptures.

When: Monday to Friday 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.

Security: Visitors to the Capitol are required to pass through metal detectors and have bags checked through an X-ray machine. Personal belongings such as backpacks and large bags should be left behind. Sharp objects such as pocket knives, nail clippers, weapons and annoying devices such as whistles and noise sources are not allowed into the building.
