A variety of delays mean the latest Qashqai vehicles arrived in Australia later than initially expected, and the SUV has been on sale in the UK – where it was manufactured – for more than a year.
As with many manufacturers, Nissan has been affected by the lack of semiconductor chips used to power on-board electronics in modern cars.
As I mentioned chasing cars In late 2021, the latest Qashqai model will continue to offer four grades, ranging from the ST to the top-spec Ti. A summary of the equipment is available at the end of the article, and pricing is expected to be announced soon.
Turbo petrol now, e-Power Hybrid is yet to come
When it lands in Australia, the Qashqai will initially only be offered with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine – but more powerful and torquey. 110 kW / 250 Nmconnected to a CVT transmission and front wheel drive (FWD).
But the powertrain we’ve all been looking forward to is the e-Power hybrid model that uses 115 kW 1.5 liter gasoline engine works as a generator to provide electricity for the vehicle 140 kW / 330 Nm Electrical engine.
This system is called an extended range hybrid and differs from the system used by Toyota which is a parallel sequential setup in that the gasoline engine does not drive the wheels, but instead generates power for the battery and the motors – which drive the car.
It’s a larger car, too, with each dimension roughly 30mm larger than before. The Qashqai is 4425 mm long, 1835 mm wide and 1625 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2665 mm.
The Qashqai also gains a multi-link rear suspension even in the base variant which is not uncommon since the torsion beam setup is much cheaper.
Even in the Qashqai ST base, the car comes standard with equipment such as an 8.0-inch touchscreen, 7.0-inch display, wired Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, LED headlights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Higher-level variants such as the ST-L and Ti are based on this standard specification. The ST-L will include wireless charging, leather-trimmed upholstery and a power driver’s seat. Larger 19-inch alloy wheels, LED indicators and adaptive headlights make this trim level stand out from the outside.
The best-in-class Ti variant will add a panoramic sunroof, a unique rear bumper, ambient lighting and a black headliner. The Ti also includes standard features that include a 12.3-inch digital driver’s package, a 10-speaker Bose stereo, and quilted leather seats that include heating and massage functions for the front passengers.
