Neighbors react to the rape of an 11-year-old girl on the east side of an Indianapolis park

Neighbors who live near Indianapolis Park on the east side expressed their grief Friday after an 11-year-old girl was dragged into a wooded area of ​​the park and raped.

“It’s very close to home,” said Jennifer McCommon, who lives a few homes from the park on Forest Manor Avenue. “Kids should be able to be kids. Kids should be able to go out and play.”

Investigators arrested James Howard Jr., 51, Wednesday in connection with the rape of the girl that occurred Tuesday night, according to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

“The bravery of the survivor cannot be overstated,” Marion County District Attorney Ryan Mears said in a news release. “Her actions and information provided by the community put us in a position to bring this case.”
