McLaren announces purchase of Mercedes EQ Formula E Team RaceFans

The McLaren Racing team has confirmed that they will be getting the Mercedes EQ Formula E team and rebranding as their own entry into the series next year.

Mercedes announced last year that it would leave Formula E at the end of 2022, before introducing the new third-generation car for the ninth season of the electric championship.

McLaren Racing had previously expressed an interest in joining the series when introducing the third generation car. They confirmed today that they will do so by purchasing Mercedes EQ, the current Formula E team champions.

McLaren Group was previously involved in the series through its McLaren Appliance division having supplied the original Championship ECUs and was the exclusive supplier of batteries until the end of this season. McLaren Applied was sold by the McLaren Group in 2021.

Upon completing their acquisition of the Mercedes EQ, McLaren said current team principal Ian James will remain in his role to enable a “smooth transition” to its new McLaren identity.

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said acquiring the Mercedes EQ would provide broader racing programs a “competitive advantage” by expanding their knowledge of electric vehicle technology.

“McLaren Racing is always striving to compete against the best and on the cutting edge of technology, to provide our fans, partners and individuals with new ways to excite, entertain and inspire,” Brown said. “Formula E, like all of our racing series, meets all these criteria.

“We are also pleased to provide a place for the class-leading Formula E team built by Mercedes, which will become a full part of the McLaren Racing family. While operating separately for the F1 and IndyCar teams, Formula E is complementing and building an EV racing program alongside Extreme E. ”

The recent expansion of McLaren’s racing activities means it will be present in Formula 1, IndyCar, Extreme E and Formula E from 2022.

Mercedes EQ Team Principal Ian James said it would be a “privilege” for his team to join the McLaren team.

“McLaren has always been synonymous with success and high performance,” James said. “This is an amazing moment for all parties involved, but above all, for the people who make up this team. They are what keeps his heart beating. I am so excited to be able to continue working with them.

“I am very much looking forward to this next chapter for the team and I will be a proud member of it in 2023. Until then, we will focus on delivering the best possible results as the Mercedes EQ Formula E team, for the remainder of the current season.”

Mercedes EQ currently leads the Formula E Team Championship with 120 points. Stoffel Vandoorne is also at the top of the drivers’ standings after winning the final round of the series in Monaco.
