Mahindra Born Electric SUV looks to set new standards with EVs in India

Mahindra intends to return to the electric vehicle (EV) space in the near future even though it has lost its place in this space to other automakers. Mahindra will launch an assault on battery powered vehicles in the next few years which will help it overtake other brands in electric vehicles.

The automaker has unveiled five electric SUV concepts based on the new model New platform “Born Electric”. These new electric vehicles will be divided into Two sub-brands – XUV and BE. The former will consist of two models: XUV.e8 and XUV.e9 While the latter will consist of three models including BE.05, BE.07 and BE.09.

All five models will be supported by INGLO, a common modular electric skateboard. Components for this electric skateboard platform will be sourced from Volkswagen MEB engineering designed to accommodate various top-hats and wheelbases and is also scalable. The first prototype-ready electric SUV is likely to hit the market at the end of 2024.

All concepts presented boast a sharp, futuristic design that bodes well for an all-electric range. Both sub-brands have slight differences in exterior design in order to differentiate them. For example, the XUV range will feature the Mahindra Double Tops logo on the front and rear in copper, while the BE range will feature the logo with the same initials.

The exterior design of Born Electric SUVs

The XUV.e8 will essentially be an all-electric version of the XUV700 while the XUV.e9 will be an all-electric version of the same with a coupe design likely inspired by the XUV Aero concept shown at the 2016 Auto Show. On the other hand, the BE range will be a About brand new products with brand new tops. However, when released, the final production models may look slightly different than their respective initial concept models.

Dimensions

INGLO’s new architecture will accommodate electric SUVs Lengths range from 4,368 mm to 4,735 mm. The wheelbase of the upcoming SUV will range between 2762mm and 2775mm with a flex of just 13mm. The big difference, however, will be in terms of the front and rear projections, with bandwidths of 87mm and 293mm, respectively.

The XUV.e8 will be 4,740 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, 1,760 mm high and offer a wheelbase of 2,762 mm. Its coupe sibling – the XUV, the e9 will measure 4790 mm in length, 1905 mm in width and 1690 mm in height while providing a wheelbase of 2775 mm. On the other hand, the length, width and height of the BE.05 will measure 4370 mm, 1900 mm and 1635 mm respectively. This mid-size electric crossover will provide a wheelbase of 2,775.

The BE.07 will be slotted over the BE.05 and will be 4565 meters long, 1900 mm wide, 1660 mm high and have a 2775 mm wheelbase. Details of the flagship BE.09 have not yet been revealed. INGLO . technology details

The INGLO construction is one of the lightest skateboards due to its significantly lower body weight. The impact of its light weight can be felt in its range as well as in its performance with the added benefit of the Intelligent Electronic Brake System. The purpose-built platform will pack intuitive, intelligent and immersive innovations that will serve as the backbone of Mahindra EV engineering.

This skateboard platform features a top-of-the-line semi-active suspension system that will provide a combination of good ride and excellent handling. The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts while the rear consists of a five-link setup. In addition, the steering column benefits from dual rack support that ensures feather-light steering efforts and precise control.

INGLO modular architecture

Mahindra has moved away from traditional hydraulic braking systems. The new range comes with brake-by-wire technology that allows multiple brake positions for a relaxing and pedal feel. Intelligent driving modes will govern many aspects of the driving experience including suspension response, powertrain response, etc.

Powertrain Details – Battery and Engine

All Born Electric SUVs will feature a common battery pack design that uses Blade and Prismatic cell architectures. She chose Mahindra LFP (Lithium Ion Phosphate) Chemistry Which, despite its lower energy density, is considered to be safer than NMC (Ni-Mn-Cobalt) cells. Battery capacities range from 60-80 kWh and can be charged up to 80% in less than 30 minutes using a 175 kW fast charger.

Mahindra’s Born Electric SUV will be loaded to the gills as far as features are concerned. The most prominent feature is huge Triple column-to-column screen panel It features three 12.3-inch HD displays with a resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels. Other notable features include an augmented reality head-up display, 5G network capability, and over-the-air updates.

Another special feature available in the package is Vehicle Load Function (V2L) It turns the car into a portable power bank and thus enables it to power external electrical appliances such as any home appliance or camping lights.

Cabin Loading Feature

In terms of safety, Mahindra expects its new electric SUV powered by the INGLO platform to score highly in various NCAP programs including GNCAP, EuroNCAP and BNCAP. The company has focused on its active safety division by enabling SUVs with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) Complemented with Autonomous Driving L2 + Technique.

Tentative launch schedules

Mahindra has given tentative launch schedules for all upcoming electric SUVs except for the BE.09. The XUV.e8 will be the first Mahindra Born Electric product to go into production and is scheduled for launch around December 2024. Its sister coupe XUV.e9 is expected to hit the market in April 2025. The BE.05 is expected to debut around October 2025 while the BE.07 is likely to be launched around October 2026.

However, Mahindra will return to the electric vehicle segment with the launch of the XUV400, which is essentially an all-electric version of the XUV300. It will be based on the same platform as the ICE-powered compact SUV and will debut later this year.
