The 2022 Lexus NX is an all-new, all-wheel-drive vehicle. It is famous for its smooth ride and elegant cabin. For 2022, it gets a bolder look (some say divisive) and a wider range of engines. In basic form, it’s one of the least expensive SUVs in its class, but prices are rising quickly, with the most expensive model asking for nearly $20,000 more than the least. The plug-in hybrid option and F Sport Handling model mean one NX can be very different from the other.

Passenger room and comfort

2022 Lexus NX rear seats

Lexus distinguishes itself from other luxury car manufacturers with its quiet and quiet cabins. That’s right in the NX, which features perhaps the most comfortable driver’s seat in any compact luxury SUV. Front seat passengers get plenty of room, and wind and road noise is minimal.

Legroom in the second row is good, if not quite limousine-like, but that’s true for every vehicle in its class.

Features and technology

2022 Lexus NX

The 2022 Lexus NX is based on the proven chassis of the popular Toyota RAV4 family, with all the suspension elements needed to make it run like a Lexus. It’s available in several drivetrains, from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower to a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup with a total of 302 horsepower and up to 36 miles of electric-only driving. The base model NX 250 comes in a front-wheel drive format. Every other model uses all-wheel drive (AWD).

Reviews of the 2022 Lexus NX tend to focus on touchscreens. If you’re testing vehicles in their class, this may sound strange – they all have touchscreens. Keep in mind that the last generation of the NX used a cumbersome trackpad controller that no one liked. It’s gone, and that’s excellent news.

The NX comes with a 9.8-inch touchscreen display as standard. However, in many of the NX’s interior photos, you’ll likely spot a larger 14-inch screen dominating the dashboard. This is part of an expensive luxury package.

Wireless device charging, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto wireless interface, digital key capability, and over-the-air system updates are standard. Optional upgrades include ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 17-speaker, 1800-watt Mark Levinson audio system that consistently impresses reviewers.

The Lexus 3.0 security system is standard on the NX. They include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-keeping assist, pedestrian detection, and a system that warns occupants not to open the doors to oncoming traffic.

The 2022 Lexus NX lineup consists of four main models: the NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h Hybrid, and NX 450h+ Hybrid. Except for the NX 250, all other models are available in the F Sport, which includes an adaptive sport suspension, performance shock absorbers, and 20-inch wheels.

Lexus includes most of the optional features in the packages. Some, such as the electric sunroof and 10-inch digital display, can also be added on request. But shoppers should know that in a year when many cars are in short supply, ordering out-of-pack options can mean waiting a long time for your custom NX to be made.

Material and design

2022 Lexus NX

The NX has been completely redesigned for 2022 and adopts a bold look. Huge spindle mesh is not suitable for everyone. But if you like it, you might like it.

From there, the exterior is sleek and modern, with lines more curved than many crossovers and a road-hugging stance. The tailgate now features the Lexus name in bold – a feature we’re seeing on more SUVs this year.

F-Sport models ride larger 21-inch gloss black wheels and get livery front and rear bumpers that give a more aggressive look.

Among the luxury brands, Lexus is known for its quiet and luxurious cabins. Even the sporty F-Sport models don’t have the sharp BMW road manners. But high-quality, soft-touch materials are everywhere, and the interior design quality may be the best you’ll find at this price point.

Cargo room and flexibility

2022 Lexus NX Rear Cargo

The NX’s elegant exterior design takes away from it a bit of cargo space. You’ll find 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 46.9 folded down. Both numbers are lower than some competitors—the Acura RDX, for example, runs 29.5 and 58.9.

But you will only notice it on road trips. On everyday driving, reviewers find the cabin chock-full of thoughtful small sizes of water bottles, phones and wallets.
