Indiana GOP selects replacement for Representative Walorksi after fatal car crash

The Indiana Republican Party has chosen businessman Rudy Yakim to replace late Representative Jackie Walorsky, in the November ballot, according to an announcement Saturday.

Yakim previously served as Walorski’s 2012 congressional campaign finance director, and was one of 12 candidates seeking to fill Walorski’s place on the November ballot after she was tragically killed in a traffic accident in early August.

Indiana Republican Party Chairman Kyle Hopfer congratulated Yakim on the nomination on Saturday.

“Congratulations to Rudi Yakim, the second congressional district candidate in both the upcoming special and general elections,” he wrote. “Rudy will be a strong voice for northern Indiana and will continue the Jackie Wallorsky legacy of fighting for conservative values ​​in Washington, DC.”

Yakim faces Democrat Paul Storey in two elections in November. The first will be a special election to determine who will serve the remaining time in Valorsky’s state, and a general election to determine who will serve the full two-year term beginning in 2023.

Yakim is the frontrunner in both elections.

Yakim won the party election to become the candidate last week. Walorsky’s husband, Dean Swehart, endorsed him for that role as well, describing Yakim as “a political outsider who has what it takes to stand up to the agenda of Pelosi and Biden.”

Walorsky and two of her employees were killed in a traffic accident after their vehicle veered into oncoming traffic. Police say the congressman’s car crosses the center line.

Walorsky, 58, director of communications Emma Thompson, 28, and district manager Zachary Potts, 27, were killed in the crash. Edith Schmocker, 56, was the only occupant of the other vehicle, and she was also killed. Authorities say Potts was driving the SUV.
