Here’s what we know about the BMW X5 M 2022 competition

In 1999, BMW launched the first X5, the flagship of the SUV segment known internally as the E53; It was contemporary to the E46 3 Series and E39 5 Series and is one of BMW’s most iconic designs. It was replaced by the E70 X5 in 2006 and then another model in 2013 before making way for the current 2018 X5.

Ahead of the curve, in 2009, BMW launched the X5M; Powered by a 4.4-liter V8, the X5 M was one of the first hot fours to hit the market, and was capable of 171 mph when equipped with the M driver package as recorded in the vehicle catalog. The X5 M wasn’t the first X5 to be powered by an incredibly powerful engine the car initially launched with a 4.8 liter V8 option, however, the M car wasn’t a full blown with just two exhaust pipes, 360 hp, and a relatively slow 6.1 seconds to sixty.

In typical M split fashion, the X5 M came with the iconic four exhausts as well as some sporty bodywork, however, the resemblance to the standard car was much closer than it is in the current line with M cars like the G80 M3 with a completely different front end than the 3 Series current.

The packages were changed in the 2022 X5 M Competition and lost an important feature.

The BMW X5 M Competition 2022 is a practical beast

The current X5 M Competition is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 625 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque and accelerates the 5,313 pound-feet to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The Competition is 25 horsepower more than its counterpart, for lack of a better word, the “regular” X5 M sibling.

Just a decade ago, these numbers rivaled the likes of Ferrari and really are a physics curve. The X5 M’s main selling point outside of these ridiculous performance numbers is practicality, with the rear seats up, the car has 650 liters of boot space and 1,870 liters with the seats lower.

Such a large car and its large and powerful engine are in no way fuel efficient. BMW rated the car at 21.1 – 20.8 mpg, which is significantly worse than the X5 M50i. When BMW gave the X5 to its M division, they included the usual improvements; M Sport quad exhaust system, which has 100 mm exits and can be adjusted from inside the cabin. The vehicle has ample stopping power provided by the vehicle’s M brakes as well as being able to reach top speed in all conditions in BMW’s Xdrive system.

To match the model’s premium leather interior, the engine was mated to an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox. This amount of cars doesn’t come cheap; BMW lists a road price of $114,100 before options. The Stylish X6 M Competition carries a small premium over a more practical SAV, but with 580 liters of luggage space and 1,530 liters with seats, the X6 is a much less practical car that shares the same foundations.

Changes to the 2022 BMW X5 M Competition

The current GO5 X5 was launched in 2018 alongside the latest 5 Series, with the X5 M in 2020, so for the car topping the range, there aren’t any big tweaks coming yet. According to the BMW blog, this year the standard X5 will see an increasing number of options for buyers with the M Sport package, third-row seating, in-car WiFi and remote engine start.

The BMW Blog article notes that there will be no interior changes to the car, which makes perfect sense as the current generation of BMW’s iDrive system is standard for most of the auto industry, but that two exterior colors will be added, Sparkling Brown metallic, and Dravit Gray metallic.

As a result of the lack of chips, all X5s lose wireless charging, which will be a minor annoyance for many luxury SUV drivers. More importantly, it’s not a particularly fancy look for the manufacturer, especially when more affordable Volkswagens like the Polo can still offer wireless charging.

In August, a BMW blog speculated on a 2022 facelift with a larger front grille as in BMW’s current design language, but this is offset by an increase in the size of the air intakes making the display an appropriately aggressive front end for such a power vehicle. In another report, Yes Auto released spy footage of the X5 M. Partially convincing With camouflage only on the front of the car, it appears BMW is testing a new bumper or grille design.

The German brand may be testing another controversial dual kidney grille like those on the M3 and M4. This BMW test mule isn’t for 2022, with examples already being driven on YouTube, proving the car is as powerful as ever. It looks likely to be a midlife facelift on the X5 cards. The previous F15 didn’t undergo a facelift, but it’s not uncommon for BMW to revise its cars as they’ve been sold for more than five years.
