This story comes to you from Elegance Living.

When the Elegance Berkeley Hotel, the city’s newest seniors community, opens in Poet’s Corner, it will provide a place for Bay Area seniors to receive confidential care support and a range of programs and facilities designed to help residents stay engaged, socially active, and part of a thriving community.

We spoke with Nicole Dodson, Regional Vice President, Elegance Living, about what Elegance Berkeley will offer residents, families, and the city as a whole.

s: In a few sentences, who are Elegance Berkeley and how will it benefit them?

aOur community is designed to make life in Berkeley easier, safer, and more accessible for seniors. You receive confidential support with things like showering, dressing, and medication management with direct access to fitness, the arts, and continuing learning opportunities right outside your door. Housekeeping and maintenance, transportation to appointments, are taken care of. You have great healthy food prepared by a chef at home. When you are trying to manage all of these things on your own at home, or rely on family for help, it can take a tremendous amount of time and energy. Living in Elegance Berkeley frees you to do what you want to do, what is important to you.

s: What is the shape of the apartments and how many apartments are available?

aWe have 94 studio apartments and one-bedroom floor plans starting at $6,850 per month. They feature high ceilings and kitchenettes, many with great views of the bay. We are private payments. Long-term care insurance and veterans benefits can be applied. It fills up quickly because people want those apartments with a great view.

s: Are building tours available? When can residents start moving into the community?

a: Yes, you can now walk around the building! We are happy to show off the community and expect residents to start relocating in early July. There is no place like this in East Bay so I would highly encourage you to come and see it.

s: What types of facilities and programs can people expect?

a: In addition to an art lab, classroom, and salon, our residents will enjoy a bistro, wine bar, full-service restaurant, a beautiful courtyard with custom fitness equipment, family dining, and an outdoor movie theater. We also have an indoor theatre, a standard auditorium, a massage suite, a telehealth check-up room, and physical and occupational therapy on site. and special rooms for sensory relaxation and music for our poor memory residents.

Our adapted programs include yoga, tai chi, cardio, ecotherapy and clean breathing, museum visits, inspirational services, on-site visits from the California Institute of Jazz, virtual travel talks, volunteer projects, social coffee and more.

s: What inspired you to focus on the arts in your amenities and programs?

a: The arts and learning are an important part of life that is self-fulfilling in every age, and Berkeley is at the heart of this ethos. Seniors in East Bay are well educated and travel well. So we partner with many local arts and educational institutions to support the interests of our residents. We have a wonderful on-site art lab designed for young and old alike where we will be collaborating with Sticky Art Lab for on-site intergenerational art programs, Brushstrokes for Pottery and Ceramics, and Kala Art Institute for a variety of classes.

We are also pleased to offer the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UC Berkeley for continuing education to our residents.

s: What makes your site special?

aOur location on San Pablo Avenue near University Street places it in the middle of a thriving neighborhood of international restaurants, local businesses, and specialty shops, all within walking distance.

Of course, Berkeley residents have a passion for arts, theater, and culture. When they choose to live in Elegance Berkeley, they certainly won’t feel as though they have walked away from their lives and the things that really push them forward. Indeed, it will be easier than ever to continue to participate, contribute and enjoy regular opportunities to interact with people of all generations.

sHow will Elegance Berkeley benefit the poet’s corner neighborhood?

aOur goal from the start has been to make our community a hub of activity and a fully contributing part of the neighbourhood. We’re right on the street, with windows everywhere and some retail space. The ground floor contains a salon and classroom where local organizations can do speaker series, yoga and any number of events of interest to the neighborhood, and a custom-built art lab. We will have a rotating art exhibition, and there will be attractive programs taking place every day. So we are committed to being a vital part of the city and adding value to East Bay.
