The 4.005 kilometer Ricardo Tormo is hosting the season opener for the eighth time and has been a staple of the EuroNASCAR schedule since 2012 – the year the tournament became the official NASCAR European Series. After free practice, it is not possible to make any predictions about who will come out on top from Whelen Engineering’s first event and EuroNASCAR season 10 to race together.
With a staggering lap of 1:42.368, Day topped the overall standings ahead of EuroNASCAR PRO newcomer Tobias Dauenhauer, who was just 0.003 seconds slower than the three-time champion PK Carsport Chevrolet Camaro. While the top ten were separated by just a second difference, 2021 runner-up Gianmarco Ercoli is seeded third after two free practice sessions. He was followed by Nicolo Rocca and Patrick Limari, who closed the top five on a promising first day of work in Valencia.
With 7 Junior Trophy drivers on the track, the battle for the deciding tenth of a second is already blazing in Free Practice. Dauenhauer was the fastest driver aged 25 or younger. Leonardo Colavita and Giorgio Maggi rounded out the top three. With 17 Challenge Cup competitors, the EuroNASCAR Semi-Professional Drivers Ranking sets a field record in EuroNASCAR history. EuroNASCAR 2 champion Martin Dubic was the fastest driver in seventh place, followed by Claudio Capelli and Max Lanza.
EuroNASCAR 2 tends to be the most unpredictable tournament in the EuroNASCAR world. Tziortzis clocked 1:42,554 laps to lead the standings, just 0.509 seconds ahead of NASCAR Rookie Alberto Naska. Dubic duo followed William Heismans and Jill Leinster, who completed the top five. As in EuroNASCAR PRO, lap times were very close together with the top 10 laps separated by about two seconds.
With 14 newcomers in EuroNASCAR 2, the Rookie Trophy will be a highlight of the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series rankings. The free practice sessions gave a first impression of the pick-up standings with Nasca being the fastest rookie ahead of Heismans and Colavita. Melvin de Groot topped the Legend Cup for drivers aged 40 and over, followed by Evgen Sokolowski and Roberto Benedetti. Luli Del Castello was Lady Trophy’s fastest competitor in the field with Aliyyah Koloc and Arianna Casoli closing in third.
The 2022 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is underway at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, Spain. Qualifiers and all races on Saturday and Sunday will be broadcast live on EuroNASCAR’s social media profiles – YouTube, Facebook and Twitch – as well as on Motorsport.tv and more TV channels around the world.
