CACI Project Manager Sgt. Major William F. Thetford, US Army (ret.) awarded the second highest military honor for heroism in combat.
RESTOON, Virginia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–CACI International Inc (NYSE:CACI) today announced that Command Sgt. Major William “Bill” Thetford, US Army Special Operations Forces Project Manager (retired), was awarded the US Army’s Distinguished Service Medal, the second highest military honor, for his heroism in combat with an armed hostile force during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.
Mr. Thetford served as a member of the assault team and team breacher in C Squadron in 1993 as part of Task Force Ranger. Mr. Thetford was initially awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the battle; However, in January, Congress and US Secretary of the Army, The Honorable Christine Wormott, elevated the medal to the Distinguished Service Cross. Mr. Thetford’s military career has included tours as the Enlisted Senior Commander (SEL) of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) culminating as SEL of US Central Command prior to his retirement in 2019.
Mr. Thetford joined CACI in 2019 and is Project Manager for Emerging Threat Special Operations Forces, Operations and Planning Support (SOFETOPS) in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Under the SOFETOPS contract, CACI provides expertise in integrated information warfare (IW) and electronic warfare (EW) solutions, and training, readiness, and modernization to enhance the missions of the Army’s Special Operations Command (USASOC).

The Mr. Thetford Medal was awarded on May 30, 2022 at a ceremony in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
