Audi AG is a German car manufacturer founded over 100 years ago, and although it is known for its combustion offerings in the luxury and performance segment, the company has begun to transform its vehicle lineup towards electrification. The move is in line with the parent company, the Volkswagen Group.
Last summer, Audi announced its electrification strategy, which includes a 2033 deadline for all new ICE models. It will be replaced by the Audi e-tron lineup of battery electric cars – which debuted in 2018 – with an EV of the same name.
Since then, the electrified Audi family has expanded with the e-tron SUV, e-tron Sportback and e-tron GT quattro. We’ve also seen more recent additions to the premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron SUVs on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, as well as the new RS e-tron GT.
During last year’s Shanghai Auto Show, Audi showcased the future of electric vehicle innovation with the A6 e-tron Sportback concept on the aforementioned PPE. During a media conference today, Audi revealed that last year it relied on the A6 e-tron concept with the Avant.
It’s a spacious and luxurious station wagon that gives a nod to the German automaker’s past, while also being equipped with plenty of new technology that will be present in future e-tron models.
Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept: a sportback with a big nightmare
Audi unveiled its second A6 e-tron concept during a media day presentation in Germany today. The new concept, called the Avant, was designed with respect to the station wagon model that debuted in 1977 (known as the Audi 100 prior to 1994). The name is derived from “avant-garde” He points to the 1995 Audi ad slogan, which states, “Beautiful station wagons are called Avant.”
When most people think of a station wagon, “beautiful” isn’t usually the first word that comes to mind. Personally, I think of sitting in the third row, looking out the back window, and waving at other cars as a kid.
However, this newer Avant concept isn’t your dad’s station wagon. For starters, it’s 100% electric, though return the childIt’s a very aerodynamic rear side. The Avant shares the same dimensions as the A6 Sportback e-tron revealed last year: 16.3 ft (4.96 m) in length, 6.4 ft (1.96 m) in width, and 4.7 ft (1.44 m) in height, making it luxurious. Class. Despite its height, long wheelbase, and thicc Rear end, the Avant Concept has an aerodynamic value (cW) of 0.24, just 0.02 units higher than its A6 Sportback e-tron counterpart. 22-inch wheels, short overhangs and a flat-topped cabin help give the Avant more sports car proportions than a station wagon.
As you’ll notice in the photo above, the view of the new A6 concept looks very sharp from the front, and it displays much of the e-tron DNA we’ve seen in production model Audi EVs. This includes a large, enclosed single-frame grille bordered by deep air intakes at the bottom to cool the driveline, battery and brakes.
The Digital Matrix LED headlights are some of Audi’s smallest headlights to date, and the automaker describes them as almost cinematic quality. In fact, Avant Concept can project a video game onto any wall in front of it when parked or recharge for example – and then display virtual landscapes in XXL format instead of a small screen in the car. The side of the body contains three small high-resolution LED projectors that provide dynamic lighting effects in any language to greet occupants when the doors are opened. For added security, the displays also display warning symbols – such as warning the driver that the car door is about to be opened. Four additional high-resolution LED projectors are integrated into the corners of the A6 Avant e-tron to also display turn signal projections.
Now, let’s talk about that back part. This Avant concept features a new continuous strip of digital OLED elements, which act as a screen that can be used to create virtually unlimited customizable variations to suit the customer’s personal taste.

Audi describes this rear end as “spacious,” but hasn’t shared any details about its payload capacity. In fact, Audi has not yet shared any internal details yet. Instead, we’ll have to focus on the inner workings that help make this concept go.
The performance of the Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept
Oh boy, that’s delicious, isn’t it? Audi should be working on making its model names more aerodynamic, just say!
The second concept of the Audi A6 e-tron will be based on the Premium Electric or “PPE” platform developed by Porsche AG. This electric platform will usher in a new era of modular electric flatbed vehicles in the future. Oliver Hoffmann, a member of the Audi Technical Development Board, spoke about platform technology and performance in the Avant concept:
With the Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept, we offer a fully concrete look at future production models on our new PPE technology platform. We’re not just electrifying Avant’s 45-year history. What we want most is to use the technical skill to add an exclamation point. In particular, this includes powerful 800-volt technology, a charging capacity of 270 kW, and a WLTP range of up to 700 kilometers (435 miles).
These specs are identical to the Audi e-tron GT quattro that came before it, with the 800-volt system allowing the A6 Avant’s concept 100 kWh battery to be charged from 5 to 80 percent in less than 25 minutes. Furthermore, its 270 kW charging capacity means it can get enough power from 10 minutes on a DCFC to travel 300 kilometers (186 miles).
By combining this drivetrain and battery technology with the “roomy” rear end of the Avant, Audi calls this e-tron concept a “storage champion”. However, we would argue that it is difficult to make this claim without sharing how much internal storage an EV can actually provide. For now, let’s call her the “Outdoor Lighting Champion.”
The future range of PPE models will include twin-engine options that use electronic coordination to deliver on-demand all-wheel drive. For example, two electric motors of the Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept can provide 350 kW of total output and 800 Nm of torque.
Audi explains that in the future, the A6 e-tron will be able to provide 700 kilometers (435 miles) of range (WLTP), depending on the drivetrain and model variant. In its fastest version, the chain will also accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under four seconds.
These two A6 e-tron concepts represent the first Audis in the C segment to sit on PPE, but their current configurations will remain concepts…at least for now. Audi has reported that the first production vehicles for personal protective equipment will be unveiled in 2023.
