Audi Q5 e-tron is ready for the Chinese car market

The new Audi Q5 e-tron will be launched in the Chinese car market soon. It’s time to take a closer look at this new electric vehicle. The Audi Q5 e-tron is an electric SUV in China only. Manufactured in China by SAIC-Audi, it is part of a larger SAIC-VW joint venture. It is based on the Volkswagen ID.6, which was manufactured by SAIC-VW (ID.6 X) and FAW-VW (ID.5 Crozz).

The Audi Q5 e-tron does not connect with the gasoline-powered Audi Q5 or the Audi Q5L. Perhaps a less confusing name would have been wiser. The Q5 e-tron is the second car under SAIC-Audi’s management after the elegant Audi A7L. Next up is the Audi Q6, a large SUV based on the Volkswagen Teramont.

The Audi Q5 e-tron comes in two variants:

1. 40 e-tron with single engine and rear-wheel drive. Output 204 hp and 310 Nm. Weight is fat 2325 kg. The battery is 83.4 kWh with an energy consumption of 15.9 kWh per 100 km. The range of the New European Driving Cycle is 560 kilometres.

2. 50 e-tron (pictured), twin-engine and all-wheel drive. The output is 306 hp and 460 Nm. The weight is much greater than 2410 kilos. The battery is the same as 83.4 kWh but the power consumption is up to 17 kWh per 100 km. The New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) has a range of 520 kilometres.

Later, Audi may add a base model of the 35 e-tron with just 177 hp. But initially they will only sell 40 e-tron and 50 e-tron.

Size 4876/1860/1675 with a wheelbase of 2965. The Audi Q5 e-tron has six seats.

The interior is beautiful and the steering wheel has an interesting shape. The digital instrument panel screen is 10.25 inches and the main touch screen is 11.6 inches. The screens look nice but in terms of size they are a bit small for China 2022. Many Chinese competitors offer much larger screens even in cheap cars. The setup is a bit dated too, with the screens spaced apart rather than using a more modern dual screen setup.

The infotainment system works on the open Audi Asterix platform. Audi says that in the future, third-party developers will be able to develop and run apps directly on this platform. But it is not yet clear when exactly this will happen. This is something important in China where dozens of new apps are launched every hour. Chinese automakers have long anticipated this, by offering open source operating systems in their cars, often developed by major software makers such as Baidu, Huawei or Tencent. However, Western automakers are more reluctant to the idea of losing control.

The lettering of the e-tron on the bumper is very cool.

Audi has opened its pre-sale order books but exact prices haven’t been announced yet. Audi says only the 40 e-tron will cost around 400,000 yuan ($62,900) and the 50 e-tron around 500,000 ($78,630). This is a large amount of money. For comparison, the ID.6 X twin engine with 313 hp (seven more than Audi) costs only 336,000 yuan. As we explained earlier, this is the car that Audi is based on. It’s roughly the same size and seats six as well. The Audi materials are certainly a bit nicer and all but still a huge difference in price.

Characters: 上汽 奥迪: Shangqi Aodi. shangqi Short for Shanghai Qiche, literally Shanghai Auto, otherwise known as SAIC. Audi It is the Chinese name for Auto.

The Audi Q5 e-tron is a good-looking electric SUV for China with decent power and a decent range. But the in-house technology looks a bit outdated and will be expensive. Will it be difficult to sell as well?
