A detailed look at all generations of the Porsche 911

If a sports car license plate can claim to be legendary, it is Porsche 911. It is a high-performance car so close to perfection that its description is often copied but never balanced. Competitors like the impressive Nissan 370Z Nismo come close, but in the end they lack the final degree of brilliance.

10 Original 901 (1963)

Before the infamous Porsche 911, there was the Porsche 901. A two-door, rear-wheel drive sports coupe powered by an air-cooled flat-six engine. If everything sounds familiar, it’s because the 901 badge was the name of an internal project. One has already been taken over by Peugeot.

9 Early Cars (1964-1973)

Now, bearing the 911’s badge, the first models came with 130 horsepower from the 2.0-liter boxer. Later 911S would see its power increase to 160 horsepower. The performance was mediocre. The 911S can reach 60 mph in 8 seconds. Covering the quarter mile in a decent time of 15.3 seconds.

8 Carrera RS Series Cars (1973-1989)

Various series “Alphabet” cars appeared throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Each brought reviews and power upgrades. The engines were enlarged to 2.7 liters and more safety equipment was introduced. The standard 911 got 165 horsepower, along with more efficient fuel injection.

The Porsche 911 debuted in 1973. It’s a special homologation, making 210 hp from a race-derived 2.7 liter engine. Weighing just 979 kg (2,158 lb), it can hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. With enough room left, the 911 RS will happily run at a top speed of 150 mph. It was simply wonderful.

7 930 Turbo (1975 to 1989)

Porsche revealed the 911 Turbo for its 1975 lineup. The sporty flared bows and whale tail wing looked great. Power weighs in at 260 horsepower from a 3.0-liter turbocharged unit. With the throttle installed, it would hit 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. Very fast at that time.

By the late 1980s, the Porsche Turbo had evolved. She has made a name for herself as being undisciplined to drive. Now featuring a 3.3-liter engine and 300 horsepower, it was ballistically fast. With a good launch, the 911 Turbo can hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and looks great doing it!

6 964 (1989-1994)

Incorporating many aspects of the Porsche 959 supercar, the 964 stepped out of the 911. The Carerra 4 appeared, offering all-wheel drive. Its 3.6 liter engine produces 250 horsepower. Allow 0-60 times of 6 seconds. The lighter Carrera 2 overcame this, hitting 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

Providing more speed, the Turbo version came in two flavors. The 3.3 engine puts out 320 hp, while the improved 3.6 liter engine puts out 355 hp. At a phenomenal speed, the modified car will hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Extremely rare, it is also amazing to look at.

5 993 (1994-1998)

993 is the most popular type of 911. This is the last time an air-cooled engine appears within the brand. It is also seen as the best optically created 911. Standard 911s now come in 268 hp, with the RS version stripped out getting 296 hp.

Once again, the Turbo got a solid bump in power. The top-spec 911 Turbo S features 403 horsepower, twin-turbo, and all-wheel drive. This equates to a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds. It is now classified as a supercar. The Porsche 911 Turbo S was a force to be reckoned with.

4 996 (1998-2004)

Having angered many fans, the Porsche 911 now uses a water-cooled engine. This generation of the 911 also shared a lot of components with the smaller Boxster model. Early standard cars made 292 horsepower from the 3.4-liter engines, while later cars made 316 horsepower from the 3.6-liter.

Inspired by the racing car, the road version of the GT3 was released. Stripped of the heavyweight, it hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Its 3.6-liter engine came in two tunes, pumping out 360 horsepower and 380 horsepower respectively. The GT3 remains one of the best handling cars ever produced.

3 997 (2004-2013)

Porsche will outdo itself with the 997. Much more refined and capable than the car it replaced. The base version made 321 horsepower, while the Carrera S saw power levels of 350 horsepower. Noted for its handling of the Base 911, it is now a more mature vehicle but still incredible to drive.

Toward the other end of the scale sat the GT models. The racing-focused GT3 RS made 444 horsepower from its naturally aspirated 3.8-liter engine. While the powerful 911 GT2 RS spit out 612 hp. A 207 mph supercar that would destroy acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

2 991 (2011-2015)

With the 991, Porsche introduced an all-new car. With a sharper, more refined look, the base Carrera model developed 350 horsepower from the 3.4-liter engine, while the Carerra S with the X51 powertrain now made 430 horsepower from the 3.8-liter.

Now using aluminum in its construction, the 911 is lighter than the previous car. A 7-speed manual has also become available. Turbo models acquired rear-wheel steering. Turbo S engine with 552 hp. The Monster GT2 RS boasts 690 horsepower from a twin-turbo engine.

1 992 (2018)

Carrera’s apprentice became even more powerful. Now using a 3.0-liter flat-top twin-turbo setup, it generates 380 horsepower. Performance is shimmering, with 60 mph hit in just 3.5 seconds. Overall, the Carrera 4 GTS produces 473 horsepower, with a time of 3.2 seconds from 0-60 mph.

Now the most powerful 911 generation, top performers are enjoying impressive output. Using a 4.0-liter flat-six engine, the GT3 has 503 horsepower. The most impressive is the Turbo S – a 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine with 641 hp. It will swallow 60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
