The price of gas in the United States reached record levels in 2022. Getting the best mileage is now the top price, and many drivers are looking for highly efficient cars – hybrids. If you’re looking for the best mileage hybrid cars on the market, TrueCar has selected hybrid cars with better gasoline mileage. Below, check out TrueCar’s top picks on the list:
1.2022 Hyundai Ioniq
The latest model to be entered in TrueCar’s list of hybrid cars with the best fuel mileage is the Hyundai Ioniq 2022. The Ioniq debuted in the 2017 model year and in 2020 saw a redesign with a fresh new look. The Hyundai Ioniq 2022 continues the evolution of this model.
The Ioniq comes in four hybrid models: Blue, SE, SEL and Limited. The most affordable option – the Hyundai Ioniq Blue – leads the way in fuel efficiency with 59 mpg combined. All other trims get 55 mpg combined. With a 11.9-gallon fuel tank, drivers can go nearly 700 miles on a single tank of regular unleaded gas.
Hyundai’s warranty on the powertrain (10 years/100,000 miles) and total (5 years/60,000 miles) are among the best you’ll find, especially at this price point.
Behind the wheel are plenty of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Thanks to the hatchback area, there’s plenty of cargo space (26.5 cubic feet). Plus, the ride is quiet and comfortable. Kelley Blue Book reviewers add that it’s easy to drive with a little learning to handle the hybrid powertrain.
2. 2022 Toyota Prius
A staple in the hybrid sedan market, the Toyota Prius has set the standards for the segment for decades, and this year, it finds itself near the top of TrueCar’s list of hybrid cars with the best fuel mileage. The 2022 model is mostly the same in 2021, with only the Prius Nightshade Special Edition making a difference for this year.
The Prius has a gas tank that’s slightly smaller than the Ioniq at 11.3 gallons, and at 54 mpg combined, it can’t quite make it far on a full tank. It’s no slouch, although you can probably get over 600 miles of it.
Drivers can enjoy more cargo space (27.4 cubic feet), and TrueCar reviewers call it a smooth ride for up to five passengers. Plenty of safety features are standard, so there’s no need to pay extra to get some of the best safety Toyota has to offer.
3. 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
Hyundai Elantra’s compact sedan looks more elegant than the Prius but still offers comparable fuel-economy ratings, especially if you choose the hybrid. Both hybrids—the Blue and Limited—provide 50 mpg combined, with the previous maxing out at 54 mpg. The fuel tank is smaller than a Prius or Ioniq at 11 gallons, but that still means you can get 600 miles from the tank, especially if you’re highway driving.
A hybrid engine gives you more power than any of the hybrids at the top of this list, which really shines through in the driving experience. KBB reviewers note that the transition between electric and gas is smooth and quick, like the Elantra’s Sport Model N.
Without the hatchback, cargo space is less than that of the Prius or Ioniq (14.2 cubic feet). However, with the high efficiency, sharp looks and warranties that Hyundai offers, TrueCar ranked it as the best hybrid sedan of 2022.
4. 2022 Honda Insight
Honda Insight, the hybrid compact sedan, is billed as the Honda Civic Hybrid and is among TrueCar’s picks for hybrids with better gas mileage. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine gives you 52 mpg — not far from the top marks in flagship Hyundai or Toyota hybrid models. However, you can’t go quite far in a full tank, with the smallest fuel capacity on the list yet.
Although it may not get you very far, reviewers consider it to be more fun to drive. The character transcends the Prius and the Elantra, and can easily seat five passengers to travel in comfort. TrueCar ranked fifth among the best hybrid sedans of 2022.
5. 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
Hyundai’s third entry in TrueCar’s list of hybrid cars with the best fuel mileage is also the largest sedan in its fleet. The Hyundai Sonata is eight inches longer than the Elantra and over 500 pounds heavier. This increase in volume affects fuel economy; The Hybrid Blue trim gets 52 mpg combined, but the other two — the more popular SEL and Limited — get 47 mpg.
However, the larger dimensions also mean you get a larger 13.2 gallon gas tank. With Hyundai Sonata Blue trim, you can get nearly an Ioniq in one tank. It also features the most powerful engine on the list to date with 192 horsepower. Although it’s not as fun behind the wheel as some competitors, Hyundai’s safety features and warranties make it worth the lower price tag than other mid-size sedans.
6. 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid
This compact sedan is one of the best-selling cars in the world. The hybrid model is also one of TrueCar’s choices for hybrid vehicles with maximum gas mileage. Toyota Corolla Hybrid comes in one design: LE. The LE has one of the lowest MSRPs on the list and some better mpg numbers—52 combined with an 11.4-gallon tank. True, the 2.0-liter engine was described by TrueCar as “noisy”.
As part of the Toyota hybrid line, it has a full range of safety features, including several driver assistance systems. There is plenty of room inside as well for front and back seat passengers. However, TrueCar says driving isn’t as fun as some of its competitors.
7. 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Toyota’s popular mid-size sedan, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, also made TrueCar’s list of hybrid cars with the best gasoline mileage. It comes in multiple design options: SE, LE, XLE and XSE. All four have the same power output—208 horsepower from the 2.5-liter inline-four hybrid engine—but the fuel economy is slightly different. The LE trim gets 52 mpg combined, while the other three averaged 46 mpg.
Like the Corolla, the new Toyota Camry Hybrid is spacious inside, with enough room for five passengers to sit comfortably. Plus, you get the set of safety features that are included in most Toyota models. However, all-wheel drive is not offered on Camry hybrid models, and KBB reviewers report that braking can be a bit stiff due to the brake energy regeneration function.
