When Consumer Reports looks at data and survey responses to compile the best list, car buyers take notice. If you are interested in midsize SUVs, there is one list you have to see. CR looked at analyzes of ownership experience and compiled the five most reliable midsize SUVs in the used car segment. Based on high reliability scores, CR road test ratings, and owner satisfaction ratings, these five SUVs are some of the most reliable. Buying a not-so-new three-year-old SUV model would be a smart move, especially if reliability matters a lot to you.
1. 2019 Acura MDX
Consumer Reports begins its list of the most reliable midsize SUV with the 2019 Acura MDX. Price ranges between $35.775 and $44,450, which is a little steep but well worth it. The owner reports that mpg hovering around 22. The three-row SUV comes with a 3.5-liter V6 and offers plenty of luxury touch points. It is a “fun fast cruiser” with comfortable seats and a dual-screen infotainment system. The handling isn’t the sharpest, and some of the more innovative technologies, such as the surround camera view, are only available in the higher advanced package.
2. 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
Next on the most reliable list is the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The five-passenger SUV earns high marks among owners with a price range of $24,450 and $34,850 and engine options are available with either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The overall mpg was rated at 24 among vehicle owners and 21 on the CR test. You’ll love the comfortable seats and spacious cabin. In addition, several driver safety aids, including forward collision warning, blind spot warning, and automatic emergency braking, come standard. The power delivery may appear “irregular” during take-off. With that, overall, there’s a lot to love about the Santa Fe’s responsive steering and handling.
3. 2019 Mazda CX-9
You can’t have a more reliable midsize SUV list without the Mazda CX-9. Consumers love the stylish third-row SUV, in part because of its affordability. You can buy 2019 for $27,625 to $37,800. Every CX-9 gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s super responsive, and earns “22 mpg.” Driving the CX-9 is fun, comfortable and quiet. The refined décor makes you feel completely luxurious. It’s a more compact cockpit, and the infotainment controls might take a little extra time to learn. However, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 is a reputable option.
4. 2019 Nissan Murano
If you find a 2019 Nissan Murano for sale, it’s worth a look. As a CR-recommended entry on this list of the most reliable SUVs, the Murano is all about interior style and luxury. You can expect to pay $26,775 to $34,875 for one of these gems, earning about 23 mpg. Enjoy a “powerful and refined” 3.5-liter V6 engine, a quiet cabin, and all the sense of luxury. There are plenty of standard features, with nice upgrade options as well. However, the ride isn’t quite as smooth with 20-inch wheels as it is with the standard 18-inch options.
5. 2019 Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback’s middle name may be to trust. Subaru is known for producing long-lasting, reliable and capable ride-on cars. So, it’s no surprise that the 2019 Outback earned the number one spot on Consumer Reports’ reliability list. For a midsize SUV, pushing $25,250 to $35,550 and earning 26 mpg are welcome value propositions. The Outback comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine but is also available in a 3.6R variant. Owners love the increased visibility and robust list of standard safety equipment, such as a backup camera, as part of the EyeSight suite of driver aids. It’s not as punchy, fun to drive or upscale as some of the other contenders in the segment, but the 2019 Subaru Outback is always worth a try.
If you’re keeping an eye on a used and midsize SUV, keep this Consumer Reports list in mind. This SUV is among the most reliable SUVs on the market.
