Compact sedans on their own know how to sip their fuel. But they can do it better with some mixed help. And they achieve this huge gas mileage without the sacrifices of the “economy cars” that were made in the past decades. However, even within this fuel-efficient fleet, some models stand out for their efficiency. So, if you are shopping for compact hybrid sedans with the best fuel mileage, the cars listed below should be on your list.
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid has the best gas mileage of any new compact sedan when shipped.
Although hybrids already have better gas mileage than non-hybrids, plug-in hybrids take them a step further. Because they can run on battery power alone, and then recharged with gasoline, PHEVs offer EV-like advantages with fewer disadvantages. And if their batteries are charged, they won’t burn any fuel. Which is why the plug-in hybrid sedan with the best gas mileage is an all-electric sedan: the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid.
Like its non-plug sister, the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a dual-clutch six-speed automatic. But while the PHEV model also produces 139 horsepower, it has a larger lithium-ion battery pack and a more powerful electric motor. As a result, the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid has a battery-powered driving range of just 29 miles. And in electric and gas combined driving, it gets 119 miles per minute according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Admittedly, the fuel efficiency of your 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid will suffer if its battery lacks a charge. On gas alone, this ‘only’ plug-in hybrid sedan gets 52 mpg, says the EPA. However, this is still good for a driving range of 620 miles. In addition, it has the lowest operating costs compared to any new hybrid.
Unfortunately, if you want one, you’ll have to act fast, because Hyundai will discontinue it after 2022.
Among the non-electric plug-in hybrid sedans, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue gets the best gas mileage.

Because of the PHEV propulsion system, the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid technically has the best gas mileage of any new compact hybrid sedan. However, there’s another compact four-door hybrid that outperforms the battery-discharged fuel economy claims. This will be the base 2022 Hyundai Ionic Hybrid, Blue.
Although all non-PHEV Ioniq hybrids get excellent gas mileage, blue is the best of the bunch. It gets 58 mpg city from an estimated 58 mpg city, 59 mpg combined, and 60 mpg highway. By comparison, other Ioniq Hybrid models get 54 mpg city, 55 mpg combined, and 57 mpg highway. And the color Ioniq Blue doesn’t just save you money at the pump—as mentioned earlier, it’s the cheapest look.
Sadly for fuel-sipping enthusiasts, like the PHEV version, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue will be gone after 2022. So, if you want to buy one of the most efficient new compact hybrid sedans, the clock is ticking.
After 2022, the Elantra Hybrid Blue will be Hyundai’s most fuel-efficient compact car

Don’t worry, compact hybrid sedan shoppers, Hyundai will still have something to offer you next year. And if you can’t wait or can’t wait, you can take its futuristic carrier from the best compact hybrid crown, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue.
As with the Ioniq Hybrid, blue is the base color on the Elantra Hybrid. And, as with the Ioniq, it’s also the most fuel-efficient variant of the Elantra Hybrid. The other, limited segment, gets an EPA-estimated 49 mpg city, 50 mpg combined, and 52 highway mpg. However, the 2022 Elantra Hybrid Blue gets 53 mpg city, 54 mpg combined, and 56 mpg highway.
If you’re willing to sacrifice some mpg, the 2022 Elantra Hybrid Limited has some great additional features. It has a larger touchscreen, as well as a digital instrument cluster, 64-color ambient lighting, and leather upholstery. MotorTrend says the blue isn’t exactly barren, although the interior is very sticky. However, it is a neat way to save on the pump.
#4 Small four-door hybrid with the best fuel economy is the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Although some consider the Prius a compact hybrid, Toyota itself describes it as a mid-size car. Also, it’s really a hatchback, not a sedan, so it doesn’t belong on this list. But another Toyota, the 2022 Corolla Hybrid, does.
While it’s not Toyota’s most fuel-efficient hybrid, the 2022 Corolla has one of the best gas mileage estimates among compact sedans. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it gets 53 mpg city, 52 mpg combined, and 52 mpg highway. And while it’s not nearly as efficient as the Prius, it’s significantly cheaper.
If fuel mileage isn’t the only thing on your mind, you might want to put off getting this compact hybrid. For 2023, the Corolla Hybrid gets a new touchscreen, an upgraded battery, additional safety features, and an optional all-wheel drive system. This last feature will undoubtedly affect fuel economy to some extent. However, it is not a box that you need to mark. Other upgrades will address some of the car’s flaws, MotorTrend claims.

Waiting, though, isn’t an option for the latest plug-in hybrid sedan on our “best fuel mileage” list. Just like the Ioniq Hybrids, the Honda Insight is dead after 2022. But you can still save some fuel with one before the latter leaves too much for the dealer.
Honda offers the 2022 Insight in two models, and as with Hyundai’s hybrid, the base is the most efficient. The Insight EX gets 55 mpg city from EPA, 52 mpg combined, and 49 mpg highway. Meanwhile, the more luxurious Insight Limited gets 51 mpg city, 48 mpg combined, and 45 mpg highway.
While it’s not the most efficient plug-in hybrid sedan, the 2022 Insight is a “premium sedan, period,” MotorTrend reports. Its rear headroom is a little weak and its CVT drones a little, but it rides and handles neatly. Also, it has a large number of storage spaces spread throughout. So, even if it doesn’t have the best gas mileage ever among hybrids, there’s a lot to like about this sedan.
