CX-5 vs. Rogue: Cut Above

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 2022 compact SUV is now in its second generation. For 2022, Mazda restyled the overall CX-5 and added additional content to sweeten the deal. The overall ride quality has been improved and the suspension system has been upgraded to improve handling. Mazda is raising it, making all-wheel drive standard on all models.

Power was moved for a 2022 Mazda CX-5 from the previous year. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter inline-six, making 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. CX-5 Turbo models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque using regular 87-octane gasoline. On 93 octane, power increases to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines use a 6-speed automatic transmission to send power to Mazda’s i-Activ AWD system. G-Vectoring Control Plus adjusts engine torque and brake force for optimum stability.

The CX-5’s interior is unchanged from the 2021 model, with the Sport base getting a cloth interior. Moving up the ladder finds interiors in faux leather, real leather, and rich nappa leather on the Signature model, which also includes real wood trim. Mazda’s standard safety package adds forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, and more. All CX-5 models carry a destination fee of $1,225.

Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue received a complete update in 2021. For 2022, it is largely carried over, with the exception of the new 1.5-liter VC-Turbo engine. It replaces the previous four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower. EPA fuel economy is 33 mpg combined, a 3 mpg bump over the outboard motor.

The Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been reworked and now includes a wider “gear” range with less friction. This improvement gives better firing speed and a feel that is closer to a traditional “equipped” transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is $1,500.

Most buyers will be happy to start with the Rogue SV model. It comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, ProPilot Assist, NissanConnect, and an 8-way power driver’s seat. The list of features continues with remote engine start, dual-zone climate controls, 6-speaker audio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control are also included.
