2022 Lamborghini Huracan STO . Review

After speaking to Lamborghini’s head of design, Mitja Burkert, at the recent Huracan Tecnica launch, it’s becoming very clear that cars like the $596,000 Huracan STO are going to be harder and harder in the future.

Something as simple as the driver’s instrument display can no longer remain so low, which means the dashboard position must be raised to accommodate markets like Japan.

Not to mention the exhaust noise, emissions and safety systems for both the interior design but also pedestrian safety and God knows what else – it’s a minefield.

The truth is that the Lamborghini Huracan and Aventador family leaves behind a legacy that will undoubtedly replace it in terms of power, technology and performance.

But there is unlikely to be a truer expression of Lamborghini’s DNA – loud, obnoxious and bearing a blatant disregard for societal norms, arguably much like their owners.

Nowhere else in the Huracan family is more on display than STO. The road racing car, the Super Trofeo Omologata, is Lamborghini’s ultimate expression of performance in the Huracan family. The naturally aspirated V10 doesn’t care about 12.3 percent of the Green Party’s primary vote.

While we were at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia recently, there were half a dozen STOs sitting out to use as coach cars, so when no one was watching, he really decided to get into the beautiful Blu Laufey specs and get off on the right track. I hope no one notices.

Visually, it’s hard not to let your inner child out when you’re standing near the STO and smiling enthusiastically. Huracán has never looked ridiculously good.

It’s a gigantic game, more absurd in every respect than even the Aventador SVJ. It’s basically a Super Trofeo racing car wearing a suit. Honestly, it’s not even an expensive suit since a lot of the aerodynamic parts feel very fragile to the touch – it’s all about saving weight, as 75 percent of the body panels use carbon fiber.

There is no point – at least in your author’s opinion – to buy a one-color STO; Do her best and make her look as crazy as possible. Most importantly, as the designers wanted, a dual color scheme that accentuates the front “mustache”, sides and rear apron with a contrasting finish.

This is the kind of supercar that doesn’t have the concept of precision. No matter where you go, when you go, and when you go in the future, they will catch the eye.

Comparing the STO to Tecnica or EVO is somewhat illogical, as both are designed for completely different purposes.

Lots of car companies like to say their supercar is a race car for the road: Ferrari claims that with its own series of cars like the Speciale and Pista, and there’s some validity to that. But the STO falls more into the Porsche 911 GT3 RS class where it looks like a race car and looks like a race car, because it’s very much a race car.

Our exit on the track was relatively light, trying to fine-tune the brake points from the Huracan Tecnica engine. It feels completely different with the Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, and for the road we’d probably say not ideal if you’re going to drive this as a weekend cruiser in the nightlife area.

The interesting thing about the Huracan STO is that he loves to drive on the edge and only on the edge. He reacts best when you’re at your limit and take the STO with you on the ride.

Realistically speaking, the average driver limit isn’t even close to that of the STO, but to give you an idea, the STO’s lap time after just five laps was 4.8 seconds faster than the Tecnica around Ricardo Tormo.

This may seem surprising, given that both STO and Tecnica have the same 5.2-liter V10, making 470 kW (8000 rpm) and 565 Nm (6500 rpm), all sent to the rear wheels via the same Seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Yes, there is a 46kg weight difference thanks to the excessive use of carbon fibers all around, but that alone doesn’t make a huge difference in performance.

Ignoring the technical details for a moment, the main difference in performance is confidence and feel. The STO is incredibly implanted and secured with high speed and the steering is so responsive that you can keep pushing and shoving.

Despite it being a real wheel drive, getting on the throttle early in the corner when you start to relax, the steering seems to be a very natural operation, and while there’s definitely that feeling that this will bother you if you get it wrong, the point is that I mistook her for feeling another planet away compared to his road-traveling siblings. It’s an easy-to-slide car, too.

The standard Bridgestone Potenza tires are excellent, but we feel a set of Michelin Cup 2s, Cup2 Rs or even Pirelli’s famous Trofeo Rs would widen the gap with the more focused versions on the road. Surprisingly, Lamborghini continues with the Potenza racing tires.

The first turn in the Cirado Tormo is as close to flat an STO as any high-speed cornering, which helps hugely in terms of seat-belt confidence with its 450kg of downforce (53 percent more than the Performante and more efficient than the Performante’s). aerodynamics at 37% overall) and every corner builds on this confidence as you progress.

This brings up an interesting topic worth discussing: STO v Performante. As the owner of the latter, I can tell you that the two cars are very, very different.

While the Performante set records at the Nurburgring (6:52 min) a few years ago, STO headed to the track last year but no time has ever been officially released, which is a bit strange and unusual.

Although one is RWD and the other is AWD, the official 0-100 km/h time is 100ms faster in favor of the Performante (2.9sv 3.0s) thanks to better off-line grip.

However, the sense of direction feels worlds apart in favor of the STO. The front axle rotates with noticeably better grip, feel and feed, and the way it treads feels more manageable. The AWD system also has no issues at full lock, while the brakes also excel at stopping and behaving like a race car to brake on the track.

The biggest difference is that the STO is much easier to lean on in fast and medium corners, while the Performante is better suited to slower corners where earlier throttle action results in a better result thanks to the front axle pulling the car out.

Lamborghini’s collaborating trainers had an interesting role to play about the two cars; They believed the average person would be faster in an STO than the Performante given the level of confidence and downforce at high speed, although the difference would be minimal when tasking the Pro driver with the responsibility.

I’m not sure we would agree with that, but again I am not a professional racing driver. According to the head coach, the STO was 0.4sec faster than the Performante around Ricardo Tormo.

The biggest flaw with STO is not the car or the experience itself, but our outdated regulations. Unlike the rest of the civilized world (with the exception of Canada, we think), the racing seats used in the STO (pictured above) have an airbag that isn’t big enough for our safety rules, so it must be removed in favor of comfort seats – which Lamborghini Australia now calls sports seats – By default.

Essentially, you can go from having some of the best carbon-fiber racing buckets money can buy, to a very comfortable seat built for road driving—great if you’re getting an EVO, but not ideal for an STO.

To us, this simply means that you have to budget to replace the factory seats with something more suitable for tracking usage, or else you’ll have a purpose-built race car without the stuff that keeps you in place for its intended purpose.

Overall, it’s hard not to get excited about the Huracan STO. If you’ve owned a Huracan that’s been on the road before and want something more circuit-oriented, there’s nothing better out there. If you are entering the brand for the first time; The noise, feel and dazzle factor will not disappoint.

Perhaps the only real criticism we can stick to the STO, outside of the local seat issue, is that the chassis is so good that it can handle a reasonable jump in power and torque. But it’s also the last absolute special version of the Huracan with an engine that’s proven to be bulletproof, so why risk it now.
