Brand New in 2021 As an alternative to the Optima, the 2022 K5 remains a strong contender in the mid-size sedan segment. The turbocharged base 1.6-liter four-cylinder may seem small, but it delivers plenty of low-end torque to keep the K5 moving. The eight-speed transmission helps achieve fuel economy, while the driver-selected Sport mode adds driving pleasure.
The GT-Line top end adds some sporty looks and 18-inch wheels, while the GT top gets a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with 290 horsepower, sent via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. However, it’s worth noting that while other models in the range offer all-wheel drive, the GT model is front-wheel drive only.
We love the sharp exterior, especially the headlights and fastback design. The interior is quite impressive, with comfortable and supportive seating, a futuristic-looking instrument panel and an infotainment system. Rear legroom is a bit cramped. Most interior functions are accessed via the infotainment screen, or the redundant buttons on the steering wheel, keeping the cabin clean and tidy.
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and dual-zone automatic climate control are standard, as are automatic emergency braking. We wish blind-spot warning was also standard across the lineup, especially given the K5’s large C-pillar. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. Top bezels provide 4WD, more USB ports, Bigger touch screen, heated seats, navigation and Panoramic sunroof.
Subaru Legacy
Reasonable pricing, tons of standard safety features, and high resale value make the 2022 Subaru Legacy a worthy contender in the midsize sedan segment. It might not be the most exciting thing on the road, but it holds its own against the competition.
Standard power comes from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, connected in Subaru’s proper way to all four wheels. The transmission is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which isn’t our favorite but works well on the Legacy, with paddle shifters if you want a little more involvement. Steering is precise and handling is really fun, with a complex and comfortable ride.
While we find the exterior a little forgotten, the Legacy’s interior is quiet, comfortable, and packed with quality materials. On all models, except the base, there’s an 11.6-inch touchscreen display for entertainment, and in both rear legroom and luggage space, the Legacy holds its own against the leaders in its class.
Standard features include EyeSight’s suite of driver assistance features, two 7-inch infotainment and climate control screens, fabric upholstery, satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims add a larger touch screen, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable and heated seats, navigation, a sunroof, and on top the Limited XT and Touring XT’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Touring also adds heated and ventilated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and a 180-degree front camera.
