2022 Kia K5 vs 2022 Nissan Altima comparison

The 2022 Kia K5 and 2022 Nissan Altima both have a choice of engines as well as optional all-wheel drive, which is relatively rare among midsize sedans. Here is how they compare.

above average: Handsome appearance sharp interior fuel economy.

Below average: The GT model is front-wheel drive only; The sunroof cuts into the headroom for the rear seat.

consensus: A mid-size sports sedan with a Fastback look, the 2022 Kia K5 delivers technology, comfort and great driving etiquette in a great package. The turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine offers good fuel economy, while the GT Sport model gets a powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged engine.

Below average: All Wheel Drive (AWD) not available with a turbo engine; Some security features and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto are not available on the base base.

consensus: With great seats, two engine options, and good safety features, the 2022 Nissan Altima is an affordable contender in the mid-size sedan segment. The rear seats are a little cramped, and the base engine and CVT assembly can move quite a bit when pushed hard.

K5 vs Altima: Comfort, Style, Available All Wheel Drive

Kia K5

Brand new last year as an alternative to the Optima, the K5 remains a strong contender in the mid-size sedan segment. The base engine is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder, which may sound small, but offers plenty of low-end torque to keep the K5 moving. The eight-speed transmission helps achieve fuel economy, while the optional Sport mode adds driving pleasure.

The GT-Line top end adds some sporty looks and 18-inch wheels, while the GT top features a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with 290 horsepower, sent via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It’s worth noting, however, that the GT model is front-wheel drive only.

We love the sharp exterior, especially the headlights and fastback design. The interior is quite impressive, with comfortable and supportive seating, a futuristic-looking instrument panel and an infotainment system.

However, the hind legroom is a bit cramped. Most interior functions are accessed via the infotainment screen or the redundant buttons on the steering wheel, keeping the cabin clean and tidy.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is automatic emergency braking, although we wish blind-spot warning was standard on all trims, especially given the K5’s large C-pillar. Other standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. The upper rims offer optional all-wheel drive, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, more USB ports, and larger wheels.

Nissan Altima

Without fail, one thing we always praise on a Nissan Altima is its seats. Supportive, comfortable and perhaps the best in any mid-size sedan, it’s perfect for hours behind the wheel.

Power in the 2022 Altima comes from a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, connected via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels or optionally, all four, which is somewhat rare in its class. In normal driving, the CVT is just as fun, but when pressed it can be quite a drone, almost unsure of itself.

The real star, though, is the shiny and silky 2.0-liter turbo in the 2.0 SR. The Sport version, the SR has paddle shifters, sport suspension, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, but it can’t be selected with all-wheel drive.

We love the fresh exterior, and the interior of the 2022 Altima is simple and functional without being flashy. Controls are basic, and while the Base S gets a 7-inch touchscreen, the Edge SV and above get an 8-inch screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. Seating is fine for four, although the rear legroom is a bit cramped compared to some competitors. The trunk provides 15.4 cubic feet of usable space.

Available on SV models and above, the Nissan Safety Shield 360 package includes Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and lane-keeping technology. The upper trims get things like leather seats, navigation, a Bose audio system, and ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s semi-autonomous driving feature.
