2022 Kia K5 is a mainstream sports sedan

Affordable midsize cars used to be the default choice for family car shoppers, but we’ve left this world behind. SUVs outperformed cars and trucks combined last year.

With prices ranging from $23,790 to an average of $30,000, the Kia K5 is one of the most performing vehicles in the affordable mid-size segment.


The K5 comes in five trim levels for 2022: a base LX, a well-equipped LXS, a GT-Line with sportier appearance upgrades, a luxury EX, and a high-performance GT.

The first four cylinders on that list use a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower. This is fairly standard for the non-luxury mid-size car class. It beats 163 horsepower from a base Chevy Malibu engine but trails 202 horsepower from the Toyota Camry. Power goes to the front wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Kia engine is tuned to deliver the most torque at close speeds, which means even the slowest K5 runs a respectable zero to sixty times in about seven seconds.

If performance is your concern, though, you’d be better off showing off the K5 GT. That’s something that doesn’t bother every manufacturer anymore — a performance-oriented version of its mid-size sedan. The GT is carried by a 2.5-liter, turbocharged, 290-horsepower four-cylinder mill. Competitors like the Malibu and Honda Accord can’t match it. Toyota offers a 301-horsepower option in the Camry, but the Camry also beats the K5. The K5 GT may be the fastest family car in its class, going from standstill to 60 mph in just over five seconds. It uses a wet dual-clutch transmission for faster shifting. There’s no manual transmission option, but the transmissions give you some extra control.

Handling and braking

The K5 is among the liveliest mid-size sedans. The base LX and EX models, as well as the front-wheel drive versions of the LXS and GT-Line, offer a light, responsive feel by family car standards.

Both the LXS and GT-Line are offered with all-wheel drive (AWD). They sacrifice a barely detectable amount of acceleration for a more secure all-weather grip.

The braking feel of these models is typical, although some competitors had shorter braking distances in tests.

However, the GT is a true sports sedan. Engineers re-tuned the suspension and steering rack, giving it a firmer ride and a more responsive steering feel. It rides on wider and wider Pirelli P-Zero tires.

The GT also uses larger brakes, and it’s easy to feel – braking distances are shorter than average.
