2022 Honda HR-V in Malaysia

There were many sightings of the 2022 Honda HR-V in Malaysia during Raya Week thanks to our countries which were fully operational in Raya mode this year. This means that a lot of Singaporeans have driven their new 2022 HR-Vs to Malaysia to visit their families here.

When will Malaysians be able to use the new HR-V Balik Kampung? The new Honda HR-V will come to Malaysia sometime in the second half of 2022, but perhaps not in time for Hari Raya Haji.

The HR-V is a very important model for Honda Malaysia, pioneering the entry-level SUV class in which it now competes as the Proton X50, X70 and Toyota Corolla Cross. It is very likely that Honda will launch Malaysia here as a locally assembled car just like the previous model.

What 2022 Honda HR-V will we get?

First of all, we can exclude the Honda HR-V in the US market because it is only known as the HR-V there. Globally, this SUV will be called the Honda ZR-V and is located between the HR-V and CR-V.

This version of the “HR-V” is a larger vehicle and is based on the Civic rather than the City, and is aimed at customers who find the CR-V has grown too large to meet their needs.

This is the HR-V that we’re going to get, which is what Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia are getting. But note that there are two different sides. On the left is the “normal” face, which shows horizontal bars. The car on the right is the face of the ‘RS’ with a sporty look.

Indonesia has both sides – E and E SE variants with the 1.5-liter, regular-aspirated faceplate. The sporty RS face of the model has been customized with a 1.5-liter turbo engine. In Thailand, the RS face is offered, but not with a turbo engine – the RS face is paired with a hybrid e:HEV engine there. Thailand also gets a hybrid version with a plain face.

We believe there is a chance that Honda Malaysia will offer the sporty face of the ‘RS’ only in Malaysia with a choice of engines. After all, city-hybrid models get the face of the RS here, so it could be the same for the HR-V. And it would be strange if the sporty turbo doesn’t get the look of an RS either. So we can look at the HR-V RS Turbo and HR-V RS e:HEV for sale here.

But this is of course pure guesswork, we’ll see. If only one variant gets the RS look, it’s probably a hybrid, according to Honda’s other models. Which face do you prefer – the natural face or the RS face? We think the RS face will be more in tune with Malaysian tastes.

Is the 2022 HR-V now a bigger SUV?

The current Honda HR-V for sale in Malaysia has the following dimensions – 4,346 mm long x 1,790 mm wide x 1,605 mm high, with a 2,610 mm wheelbase.

The 2022 HR-V measures as follows – 4,385 mm long x 1,790 mm wide x 1,590 mm high, with a 2,610 mm wheelbase.

Surprisingly surprising, the new car has the same wheelbase as the outgoing car. It is grown mostly in terms of external length, while maintaining the same width.

You can see from the profile comparison above that the front and rear sections of the new HR-V are slightly longer than the outgoing model.

What engine will the 2022 Honda HR-V get in Malaysia?

Globally, the 2022 Honda HR-V is available with three engine options. The base engine is a 1.5 liter engine. For those who want more power, there’s a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Then there’s the e:HEV Hybrid for those who are into a bit more technology in their cars.

1.5 liter four-cylinder engine NA
– 121 hp at 6600 rpm
– 145 Nm at 4300 rpm
CVT transmission

1.5 liter four-cylinder turbo engine
– 177 hp at 6000 rpm
– 240 Nm @ 1700-4500 rpm
CVT transmission

1.5 liter four-cylinder e: HEV . Hybrid system
Atkinson cycle
– 105 HP, 127 Nm of engine
– 131 hp, total system output of 253 Nm

In the e:HEV hybrid system, the 1.5-liter engine is powered by two electric motors. The e:HEV system most often uses the engine as a generator using one of the electric motors, which also serves as a starter. The second electric motor is larger – used to drive the front wheels most of the time. At higher speeds where the system calculates that it is more efficient for the four-cylinder engine to drive the wheels directly, the lockup clutch engages and the engine powers the wheels instead of the engine.

It is not likely that we will receive here the normally aspirated 1.5-liter engine. The outgoing HR-V uses a 1.8-liter engine for its non-hybrid offering – downsizing a naturally aspirated engine in an SUV chassis could pose a problem customers receive here. So we think the 2022 HR-V could be a turbo or a hybrid only in Malaysia.

What is the price of Honda HR-V 2022?

This is difficult to estimate. Below are the prices for the outgoing HR-V currently for sale in Malaysia.

2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 E – 104000 MYR
2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 SE – RM 105363.85
2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 V – 113,421.92 RM
2022 Honda HR-V 1.5 Hybrid – 113,954.82 RM
2022 Honda HR-V 1.8 RS – 118,581.81 RM

However, you have to remember that these are pricing with existing SST waivers, which are due to expire on June 30, 2022. We need to go back in time a little bit to 2019 to get pricing with the SST, because the new HR-V will more than likely be It is priced with SST included. We can see that SST accounts for about 4-5% of the price tag.

2019 Honda HR-V 1.8 E – 108,800.00 Ringgit
2019 Honda HR-V 1.8 V – 118,800.00 ringgit
2019 Honda HR-V 1.5 Hybrid – 120,800.00 Ringgit
2019 Honda HR-V RS – 124,800.00 ringgit

Prices for the new HR-V could go up a bit due to the higher positioning of the engines on offer, if we wanted to get only the turbo and the hybrid, and skip the 1.5 aspirated usually.

If you look at the price of the new City Hatchback, the e:HEV RS is priced at RM107,783.09 while the most expensive petrol model is RM91,708.51. City Sedan e: HEV RS reaches RM105950.45 compared to RM90212.36 1.5V. This is a very large premium for the hybrid system – about 15 thousand RM or about 17% price premium.

This is because new hybrids use Honda’s new i-MMD system which is more expensive than the outgoing i-DCD system because it is more advanced. You drive a largely electric car with an ICE generator.

If we take the 2019 HR-V 1.8 V’s RM 118,800.00 with the SST price tag as a baseline and add 17%, a new HR-V model from the e-band could cost RM138k: HEV RS. This will still be cheaper than the last CR-V with SST starting at RM151k, so it’s a real possibility.

Are you anxiously awaiting the launch of the new Honda HR-V? If so, have you already made a reservation with an agency? Leave a comment and let us know if the sales staff have given you any hints about pricing and specs!
