New for 2021 is the Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid Jeep with 21 miles of electric-only range. Interestingly, it also allows up to a few hours of silent EV off-road driving. With 375 horsepower, it’s among the most powerful Wranglers.
The Wrangler 4xe allows drivers to travel just over 20 miles on battery power alone before its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine kicks in. In practical terms, that means it’s a practical electric vehicle for most Americans on most days but capable of long road trips, fun off-road driving, and grip in bad weather.
Three models of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe are offered (delivery fees included in all prices): Sahara ($52,520), Rubicon ($56,220), and High Altitude ($58,340).
Also worth noting: 4xe customers will never have to pay for electricity at any of the charging stations built by Jeep and Electrify America on popular off-road tracks across the country.
BMW X5 xDrive45e
The BMW X5 is the German brand’s mid-size luxury SUV and was among the first luxury SUVs of its kind when it debuted more than two decades ago. The latest X5 was all-new for 2019 and is a Kelley Blue Book Best Buy award winner in its category.
This year BMW added an additional hybrid variant to its popular “sports activity vehicle,” as the company likes to call it. Unlike some standard sDrive and xDrive X5 models that offer a narrow third-row option, the X5 45e only comes in a 5-passenger configuration.
The BMW X5 xDrive45e is powered by an inline 6 turbocharger with electric motor. It produces 389 horsepower and has an electric-only estimated range of 30 miles. A new gas-electric powertrain gives it more power than the last X5 PHEV (which is built around a four-cylinder engine). It also offers more than double the all-electric driving range compared to the range introduced in 2018.
The BMW X5 PHEV can tow up to 7,200 pounds and gets many of the features of the petrol-only 6-cylinder models, plus air suspension.
