2017 Audi A6 review, specs, prices, and photos

The Audi A6 is a mid-size luxury sedan that competes with a large number of competitors from all over the world, but it manages to stay at or near the top. Few sedans under the six variants offer the same available features and improved driving as the A6 – and those higher-priced sedans don’t have the A6’s verified world-class safety record.

The A6’s overall rating of 8.0 confirms its dominance. You have successfully tested the features we threw at it; Only the design and performance fall on average. (Read more about how cars are classified.)

Design and performance for the Audi A6

The 2017 Audi A6 has not changed significantly since last year. The slightly more powerful A6 Competition model offers a slight horsepower boost and better seating, while the rest of the range receives S-line exterior treatment as standard this year. The A6 was slightly updated last year to include a few more corporate Audi features such as the large “single-frame” grille design. The A6 is a refined and reserved sedan, in stark contrast to its A7 cousin.

The A6 offers two powertrain options, the 2.0-liter inline-4 turbocharged engine or the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. The former can be equipped with a 7-speed automatic, front-wheel drive or 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The latter only comes with 8-speed and all-wheel drive, which Audi calls “quattro”. For 2017, Audi is offering a more efficient version of the 3.0-liter V-6, which produces 340 hp, in the A6 Competition sedan. (The more powerful S6 sports sedan is covered separately.)

Audi A6 quality, safety and features

The cabin space of the Audi A6 has not changed much over the past decade. The wart on his nose is a confined space for the legs of the back seat. In the front, a wide range of body sizes and types fit, but the rear seat is more comfortable. The coupe-like roofline, drifting backwards is the likely culprit. With 14.1 cubic feet of space in the trunk, there’s decent, if not plentiful, storage space, too.

We haven’t seen the crash results for 2017 yet, but based on last year’s ratings, the Audi A6 is one of the safest sedans on the market, regardless of price.

Last year, Audi pulled the diesel-powered A6, the previous efficiency leader, from sale, but the A6 still manages to save fuel. Gas mileage is up to 35 mpg highway, or 28 mpg combined.

Inside, the A6 is packed with leather and technology and keeps pace with the full-size models that are the flagship sedans of other brands. The 2017 Audi A6 can be equipped with the latest and greatest technology, infotainment and convenience features available today, including Google Earth maps, high-speed in-car data and Bluetooth audio streaming.

However, this refined display may get lost in the A6’s conservative exterior. It’s also an existential problem for A6 shoppers: the A7 is similarly designed on the inside, and gorgeous on the outside, so why not go there instead?
