1967 Camaro from Nikki Chevy one of three packages 427 big power block

Even in the golden age of hot rods, the mid-’60s and early ’70s, GM’s sometimes producing them, while great, weren’t enough for a durable gearhead. They wanted more, and this pent-up demand gave rise to names like Yenko, Nickey, Berger, Motion, and others. Chicago’s Nickey Chevrolet was one of the world’s largest by volume, and in 1967 they became the first to install the 427ci big-block in the first generation Camaro. This restored 1967 Camaro RS/SS Nickey supercar is a prime example of the high-performance offering that was available to Chevrolet fans.

At the time, Nickey offered three levels of performance for the custom-made Camaros. The first stage was a few moderate tuning and styling upgrades, including heads, steering wheel, vinyl stripes, 8000rpm and special wheels. The second stage added a snot cam, a heavy-duty clutch, and a Hurst paddle shifter to the mix. For those who wanted everything, usually for competition use, there was the Stage III kit, which added stiffeners, a stronger rear differential, Racemaster tires, and a dual quad manifold (although a dual quad manifold was rarely installed) – a can package To take the Camaro to the depths of 12 seconds.

To support the 427, there was usually a four-speed M21 Muncie, 12 rear screws, drawbars, and Super Scavenger heads. The listing at Nickey has all kinds of aftermarket add-ons to choose from, so no two Nickey-built cars have ever been quite alike.

The restored 1967 Camaro RS/SS Nickey supercar, to be auctioned at Mecum’s 2022 Indy event from May 13-21, is one of Nickey’s most select 427 Camaros, and a prime example of the high-performance level available to Chevrolet buyers in that time. It is believed to be one of only three cars built using the RPO L89 427ci/435 hp OHV V-8 aluminum head with three two-cylinder Holly carburetors, and the only one produced in this color. The Stage III version of this engine was equipped with two exhaust heads, a new camshaft, solid risers and a twin four-cylinder manifold, although it was usually replaced by the two-cylinder setup used on this car. The engine has a heavy-duty clutch that is attached to a RPO M21 Muncie 4-speed transmission with a console-mounted Hurst Competition Plus transmission. Power is driven into a 12-bolt rear axle with a dosing differential.

The ’67 is finished in Tahoe Turquoise, with a custom hood fitted with a Corvette-style stinger hood and chrome-plated mounting pins. Super Sport white stripes and decals, as well as 427 serious attitude badges, define this car. This Camaro also has the Rally Sport package, which adds a distinctive grille with retractable headlights, wheel flap and bright lower body trim. Additionally, this Camaro has optional front and rear spoiler wings. The interior is trimmed in black vinyl with bucket front seats and black carpet.

The Camaro comes with a Nickey Camaro Spec Sheet, a NICB Dealer Profile Inquiry, a framed Nickey Endorsement Certificate, a signed Nickey Endorsement, and Nickey poster boards. The car is featured in David Newhardt’s books Chevy SS: 50 Years of Super Sport, Camaro: forty years, And American Super Muscle. The car also includes a special license plate from the 2013 Concours d’Elegance of America in St. John’s, a Chevy Vettefest Showcase certification, and was selected as the cover car for the first year parts and accessories catalog. For those in pursuit of a car among the rarest and best of the best, this might be the ticket.
